I'd be willing to help collect/staff the event if consensus is that this would be a good project. My vote would be definitely YES for too many reasons to put in an email this early in the morning:). Wow! What an opportunity to connect and network our program to the public. How much time do we have to get a list of books together? Can we tie in our "Request List" and the books that Sandra talked about ordering this summer (I can't remember the titles....but there were two and I'm sure they are in minutes somewhere). We could also distribute our wonderful trifold flyer to a large and diverse group of community members.

Subject: [Bookstoprisoners] Books for Prisoners - needs response today
I received this in my email this morning, and as you can see they need a reply by noon! The MLK organizing committee is offerering Books2Prisoners a chance to place donation bins at one of their film showings - they would publicize this as a book drive on their promotional materials. It looks like a great opportunity to promote Books 2 Prisoners - possibly a good way to get more volunteers, as well as a chance to get some donations.
Though I'm not a regular volunteer, I'm willing to help coordinate this if at least one other person steps forward to partner with me on it (collecting the books, staffing the table, etc.). The main question for now is : Do folks want to do this - Is there one other person willing to help? And if so, do want to specify anything particular on the publicity (ie, particular kinds of books, etc.)?

Hello Carol,
I don't know if you know me but we've met many times through Zsuzsa and Rick and you saw my family, Don and Jordi, at the Prince Myshkins concert last weekend. I am a member of the Uof I MLK commemoration committee and this coming January 18 we will be showing "After Innocence" (a new film about exonerated prisoners) during the MLK week events (you can get more info at http://www.admin.uiuc.edu/mlk/calendar/calendar.html). Although it has not been confirmed, we are trying to get the film director and one of the men featured in the film to present the film and participate in q&a. Laura Haber mentioned you at a meeting as an organizer of the Books for Prisoner program and we were wondering if the group would want to collect books during the showing. I'm sure that folks from the committee would help out. We'd advertise the book drive on publicity for the film and the entire week of events. We were thinking that big boxes could be placed on sides of the stage at the Virginia Theatre, along the side, where they may more easily be taken out through the side doors after the event.
If you and the group are interested in this, I would appreciate if you could let me know before 12 noon tomorrow, Thursday (12/7/06)....that is the deadline for the graphic artist who is finalizing all of the publicity. If you'd like to talk about this over the phone, I should be in my office by 8:45am tomorrow, or tell me where I can reach you by phone.
Sorry for the short notice, but all of us on the committee are working on many aspects of the MLK week (plus our jobs) and if an idea is made and not carried through, it just doesn't happen! I hope you understand.
peace, Alicia
