This morning, Jamie and I met with Nancy and Lieutenant Sanders at the
Satellite Jail regarding the library. Here are some highlights. After
reading these notes, please let me know what you think about the proposed
dates and times. This is especially important if you are interested in
supporting the SJ Library.

Book Load in: Saturday March 10th 9AM (must be done by 1:00, ideally
earlier [we've also been discussing doing the pot luck over lunch on this
same day]) *Nancy has asked that only registered volunteers participate in
this load-in, so if you'd like to help but don't yet have a volunteer card
issued by the sheriff, let me know ASAP. If you are already a registered
volunteer and plan on attending, please let me know.

Services Schedule: During our discussion, we decided on Every Friday
morning 9am - 11:30 and Wednesday or Monday evenings, however -- since the
meeting, Nancy has let me know that for the time being we can not actually
begin to schedule evening shifts (hopefully this will be a possibility in
the future). Assuming that Friday mornings are a time when have available
volunteers, services would begin on March 16th. We need to hear back from
you about this ASAP! Are you able to volunteer at this time?

Library Process: It is most likely that, unlike the downtown jail, there
will not be an officer present in the room for a majority of the time that
we are providing library services. However, the control office, which is
always staffed, is only a few feet away from our room and has a direct view
of the entire room. Additionally the room is equipped with a panic button
in case of an emergency. Because the classroom needs to be kept clear while
being used for other purposes, the book trucks which hold our collection
will be stored in a closet when not in use, then set up and put away after
use by trustees (a special classification of inmates with jobs &
privileges). Inmates will be brought in to the classroom in small groups,
as is the current practice down town and circulation will function the same
way as it does currently.

Storage: We have one entire closet in the classroom. When facing into the
classroom, it is the one on the right. It is being modified to hopefully
park all 10 book trucks (if all 10 don't fit, one will be moved to the
library down town, which would also be nice), plus provide us approximately
36 cubic feet of shelf space to use as stacks and to store any other library
materials.
