1.Changing the locks and giving out new keys is not a major issue, except that it might prove to be
both costly and ineffective. More door bells would also need to be installed at all doors other than the back basement door.
2.My concern is about not to have access to enough keys for our current and future key staff and especially those keystaff that work the jails and need access to the basement and library during NON work session times. We also need all our current (and could use more) keystaff to keep flexibility for staffing work sessions. Less key access means more hours that will need to be worked by each keystaff. Rather than once or twice a month they will need to volunteer that on a weekly basis. This puts too much time demand on our dedicated volunteer keystaff.
   3. Automatic locks impede our work since we would have to rush to the door each time a volunteer rings
the bell. Unless a buzzer system is installed to "buzz" people in using an intercom system similar to those used in apartment buildings. These would have to be on EVERY door. This also would cover #4 below.
   4. Limiting access to the basement through only one entrance might confuse/discourage
      new volunteers.
   5. IMC can keep a list of all key-holders and have us all take an oath. We could also initiate a sign in process upstairs and down with sign-in/sign-out times and dates. This would help with accountability issues.

It would be good to hear from everyone to be able to speak with one voice. Jane, Bob, April, Jamie, Noah et al.?

PAY Chris or whoever a few more hours per week to make sure that the building is locked and empty (or at least tennants only) each night at a specified time...say 10:30pm with the flexability to change that time for special events, and unlocked at 8am and again checked for "sleepers"? Essentially the building would be CLOSED during that time and open for all during the day and evening hours.

Security systems could also be installed in the building that use codes or magnetic keys for entrance that record name and time of entrance. Instead of keys, individual and/or group codes are set in the system.

The back door (south) is still not closing tightly each time it is shut. Sometimes it sticks and doesn't latch when you let it automatically close rather than pushing/pulling it closed. This needs to be fixed again (I know Bob worked on it not too long ago and that worked for a while). I found it that way twice last week.

    Hello all,

Do we have a consensus about how Books To Prisoners feels about the new key policy being proposed by the IMC Steering Committee? Are we fine with the plan to rekey both basement doors and the stairwell doors, and find some mechanism to make sure our volunteers get into the basement with minimal hassle during our work sessions?

I've heard some skepticism from a few keystaff volunteers, but nobody except Sandra has given a definite yay or nay to the proposal. Is anybody else showing up Thursday night to discuss their concerns? Does anybody have a particular concern or objection or counter-proposal that they want me to add to the discussion at the upcoming Steering meeting?

The meeting is 8pm this Thursday on the main floor and should be lively.

As the B2P list was broken or something last week and I could only post to the keystaff list, I'll repost my last Steering notes here.

    Bill
