Hi B2P -

We were specifically invited to apply to this scholarship grant.
Anyone interested in
attending this retreat to hone your/our organizational communications
skills? Could be
very beneficial to building organizational capacity. Don't worry if
you don't know much about the UC-IMC. As a crusty old timer :) I
would be happy to bring any IMC member up to speed on the UC-IMC as a
whole. To receive an application, send a request
to:laura at spinproject.org. Applications are due on July 11, 2007. Read
details below.

The SPIN Project invites media justice and media reform organizations
to apply to the 9th Annual SPIN Academy

August 15-19, 2007 - Northern California

The SPIN Academy is a five-day retreat for advocates with a strong
interest in strengthening the communications work of their nonprofit
organizations. Through a grant from the Ford Foundation, The SPIN
Project is able to offer full scholarships to the 2007 SPIN Academy to
one individual from each of five organizations that are working to
forge a more local, more diverse, more accountable media system.

The deadline to apply is July 11, 2007.

Lead by the entire SPIN Project staff, SPIN Academy participants study
key concepts and practice core skills in strategic communications:

communications planning
framing and messaging
audience targeting
online communications
writing for PR
maximizing media coverage

More than thirty outside experts are on hand to share their knowledge
of related specialties, such as how to find and utilize research and
polling data in message development, cost-effective uses of new media,
the growing significance of ethnic media, and strategies for
amplifying new frames.

Participants also have the chance to sit down with a communications
professional one-on-one to discuss particular communications goals and
challenges.

The ethos of the SPIN Academy is one of interactive learning and
knowledge sharing, hands-on practice, and supportive critique. A
central goal is to enjoy uninterrupted time to plan how you will apply
strategic communications in the years to come.

The SPIN Academy provides a unique opportunity to connect with peers
across the country who share a common vision of justice and work in
different social movements.

To receive an application, send a request to: laura at spinproject.org.
Applications are due on July 11, 2007.

Please contact The SPIN Project if you have questions: info at spinproject.org.

That's it for this special announcement from The SPIN Project. Pleas
feel free to forward any of this information to others in the media
policy arena you think may be interested -- we greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

The SPIN Project Staff
