Tamms Supermax Prison:
Isolation as a Tool for Rehabilitation
Tamms Supermax prison is a prison in Southern Illinois that uses extreme isolation as a tool for rehabilitation. Prisoners incarcerated at Tamms exist in constant isolation. They are not allowed contact with other inmates. They are prohibited from having physical contact with prison guards.
What is the impact on incarcerated individuals, their families and the community at large, if and when someone is released from Tamms? How does the state justify extreme isolation. Cynthia Kobel will describe Tamms and the problems created by this style of punishment/rehabilitation.
Cynthia Kobel is the Director of Tamms Supermax Committee, which focuses on the problems created by extreme isolation over long periods of incarceration. Cynthia is also the Executive Director of the Kenneth and Harle Montgomery Foundation in Chicago. Their grants include: establishing the Montgomery Students program at Malcolm X College for ex-offendersâ higher education (54% graduation rate) and the Fund for Juvenile Justice at Northwestern University School of Law. Ms. Kobel has lectured on educational solutions to prison recidivism at The World Conference for Gifted and Talented Children in Barcelona; Worldwide Forum on Education and Culture in Rome; Grinnell College in Grinnell, IA; SAFER Foundation Board of Directors, Chicago.
