Hello All,
As someone in charge of mailing packages to prisons, I've seen increasing numbers of packages that cannot be shipped out for various reasons and, in some cases, don't catch the mistakes before shipping. We have to live with occasional returns caused by the whims of the mail room personnel but some can be avoided. Please follow the packing instructions step by step and pay attention to details.
. .
My plea to trainers and packers follows:
1. Make sure packages addressed to individual inmates include both their names and their numbers. Last week I had to take back several packages to the basement because the names/#s were missing. Each package also needs our return address label.
2. If you don't find a small enough box for packing, make sure the books have enough cushioning and the packed box doesn't rattle.
3. If you have to use boxes that are not very sturdy, use enough tape to secure the package.
4. We found out recently that Menard doesn't accept boxes that have been stapled or have any metal content . To be on the safe side we need to refrain from using such boxes at all.
5. Very important: Jane diligently writes down the parole dates that are close to packing time. The packers need to check our computer info. to see whether the inmates have been already released or not. Sometimes the parole date on the envelope is so close that by the time the package gets to the prison, the inmate is already out (which, of course, is a good thing!). Hold on to those books till after the parole date and check the DCF to find out the status of the inmate.
Thanks for taking time to read this.
Happy Conferencing,
Niloofar
