[Bookstoprisoners] Strong Women Show

Hello all--
I've been corresponding with the Still Point Theater Collective from Chicago
about performing at the conference (they initially contacted Barbara). They
have formerly incarcerated women who perform poetry they have written. As
part of their program they pay the women to perform. I thought that we had
figured out a way to have them perform but now it sounds like they don't
have the funds.
I'm not sure how much money we are talking about. We had said we could pay
$150 plus a percentage of the $5 admission fee we will charge on that
Saturday night. The $150 was going to come from the $100 that was raised at
Al Kagan's salon and $50 from the conference registration fees.
I'm really disappointed that they don't think they can perform and I'm
wondering if we can raise some money from our group to cover more of their
expenses. So far, aside from the $100 from the Kagan salon, BTP funds
aren't paying for anything at the conference. One option would be to commit
another $150 of BTP funds and see if they can come down and perform for
$300.
A second option would be to see if BTP members wanted to make a contribution
towards bringing them to town (I know that Barbara had someone who wanted to
give money towards this, Deb said she could chip in, Jay and I could
probably chip in $50). I know that we are all giving a lot for the
conference and related BTP events so I don't want to assume that this is
something people can do easily or even want to do. I do know that any money
we pay them will go to the formerly incarcerated women in the form of
salary.
What do you think? I was really looking forward to them performing and
without them we are a little bit back to the drawing board for what we have
that Saturday night of the conference.
I am leaving this afternoon for Chicago and I fly to Boulder tomorrow
morning. I'll be back on Monday night. I've emailed my contact from the
Strong Women show to ask how much they would need but I haven't heard back
from her yet. I will check my email tonight in Chicago and let you all know
if I hear back from her.
Maybe you all can discuss on the email list or at BTP on Saturday about if
we want to commit some money to making this performance happen? Jay and
Barbara can answer questions about the performance as well.
Thanks!
Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,
Thanks for checking in. I'm so sorry, but it doesn't look like we can get
Sisters Rising down. We don't have the financial resources to pay them all
their fees, and we can't expect you and BFP to whip up the money either. I
apologize, but I don't think we'll be able to perform on November 3rd. We
will hopefully find a few Still Point staff members who can attend, just to
keep ourselves in the loop.
Thanks so much for your patience, and I apologize for any trouble this might
have caused.
Thanks again,
--
