BTP Meeting 10/20
Deb, Jamie, Jane, Suzanne, Jay, Barbara
*RSVP--*
Yvette, Jamie, Gary, Deb, Jane and Barbara attended the annual RSVP awards
luncheon.
BTP was one of four sites nominated for the station of the year award.
Yvette was nominated for an individual service award
*Volunteer Guide--*
Revised by Yvette, Jane and Deb for the conference.
Led to a discussion of changes to work flow (namely if we list books by
name in letters to inmates). Jay said we should not make changes to the work
flow process without deciding in a meeting. Suzanne said she feels strongly
about putting the name or number of books sent on the package inserts. Not
in volunteer guide so tabled for a later meeting.
*Follow-up report / discussion on book sale--*
most profitable books sale so far
agreement that .50 price for all paper backs was a good move—we may have
made less money but moved more books
no late night hours
Jay will take care of fixing the banner
Deb will add notes / update to Susan's book sale guide on the web
*Conference--*
Suzanne gave update—85 registered, in good shape financially, need
volunteers to be key staff for pack-a-thon, hospitality and transportation
agreed that we want to leave the BTP room in good shape and not have
craziness after the conference
*Possible Book Purchases--*
Niloofar requested we look into buying drawing books and art books.
Sandra suggested via email that we purchase the *Ex-Offenders Guide to How
to Get a Job*
Deb said we had a meeting awhile back and agreed to buy that book but it
never happened. We could get a discount through IUB new. Book is close to
$20. We need to address buying the ex-offenders guide before we talk about
buying art book.
Discussion tabled until we have a financial report.
*Mission Statement--*
Mission statement and consensus process. After a discussion and group
editing process we crafted the following mission statement based on previous
understanding of the work we do:
The mission of Urbana-Champaign Books to Prisoners is to provide books to
inmates in Illinois, to facilitate a quality volunteer experience, to offer
a venue for inmates to tell their own stories, and to educate ourselves and
our community about prisons.
We have consensus on the mission statement.
and on that topic—a discussion about consensus ensued.
Beginning with Danielle's consensus document, Deb and Barbara will come to
the December meeting with a proposed consensus documents. We will discuss at
the December meeting.
Homework: take volunteer guide home and read through, email edits to Jane
Jay will deal with formating the volunteer guide.
