Hello BTP people.
I'm not sure who to talk to about taking on a work study student, so I'm
sending this to the list.
Greg Koger, who I met through sending BTP letters to Pontiac and who has
been out for 9 months now(!)
is going to a community college in Chicago and is trying to secure a work
study program for the fall at his school.
I write you because I want to see him get his life on track and because, as
a BTP graduate, Greg wants to help us.
He is working with the PRLF, another BTP-type program that is working to get
fiscal sponsorship through the IMC.
But they don't have their non-profit status secure yet, and Greg needs to
get work study set up by Sept 23.
Greg is wondering if he can do any work for our BTP, perhaps web work he can
do from Chicago.
Then when their PRLF gets set up, he can work there.
Greg would need someone from BTP to call his school work study
administrator, Cecelia, and talk to her.
Would anybody be willing to do this?
Is there some way we can help Greg out?
Thanks, BD
Ok, just got off the phone with you. But here are the details on the
work-study thing. Basically, I was trying to get the grant for volunteer
work with PRLF, which as you know we are in the process of getting the
fiscal sponsorship finalized with UC-IMC. The problem with that is, the
deadline to get the work-study grant is the 23rd of September, and it
doesn't look like the legal paperwork crap is going to be settled for
RPLF by then. So, the other option I was hoping would work would be for
me to do the work-study with the UC Books to Prisoners project - as you
guys are already going to be the fiscal sponsor for PRLF anyways once
that does get finalized. Plus you guys helped me out a lot in prison,
sent me a lot of books, and I'd certainly like to contribute more to
help you guys out. So obviously I couldn't physically come down there
and do things, but I know a fair amount about computers and could do
some computer-related organizational stuff from here. Or I could do some
other things, if you guys had any other ideas. Maybe something related
to the National B2P conference in November... But basically, because the
PRLF fiscal sponsorship isn't officially finalized, its coming down to
the last minute, and if I don't get something finalized this coming
week, I'm not going to get the work-study grant.
So, if its possible for me to do the work-study with you guys, I'd
just need someone to call the lady at my college who does the work-study
financial aid stuff and talk to her, basically letting her know the
details of the Books to Prisoners program and letting her know its
officially a non-profit etc. Her name is Cecilia McKenzie, and her phone
number is (847) 543-2408. My name is Gregory Koger - obviously ;) - and
just so you know the contact from PRLF that has been talking to her
about the work-study is named Jackie Coleman. Just so you guys know all
the details of what has already been going on. She should know who I am,
so if you just basically tell her you are calling about the work-study
grant for Gregory Koger, she should know. And, not to put you on the
spot, but it you'd need to call her sometime this coming week, because
it has to be settled by the 23rd of September. If its possible to call
her Monday or Tuesday, that would be really helpful.
Also, I''m going to attach those pics we took today. Thanks again
Brian. Hopefully there will be no problems and I'll get down there to
see you all in November for the B2P conference.
