As per minutes of last Saturday's meeting, I've read the two emails
sent by Sara (dated 1/21 and 2/1/08). Turns out she actually asked us
to endorse a second group (Education Justice Project) as well as the
Year Ten Committee.
She says: "Each group is looking for solidarity not financial
support, and trying to build a case for prospective audiences."
And later she quotes from the Year Ten people: "We, along with the
prisoners and their families, ask the people of Illinois to join us
in protesting the IDOC's misguided and inhumane policies, and in
calling for legislation to end the torture of permanent solitary
confinement."
I assume the Year Ten group is from the Chicago area.
The Education Justice Project is a campus (UIUC) initiative, formerly
Education Beyond Bars, which is researching nationwide projects
already active in providing college-level courses in prisons - and I
assume with the aim to eventually provide the same here.
Both seem worthy causes to endorse, although not in our basic mission.
