Members and Friends,

Below you will find an article from the WW website. It is addressing a
question about sticking to a healthy eating routine with four children at
home, three of whom are teenage boys. Whether you have teenagers or a spouse
who eats differently than you I hope the article might prove helpful

Here are four quick Weight Watcher-related announcements.

A) If you are attending meetings this week, please bring in labels or
packages from some of your favorite foods.

B) This is the last week for Lifetime members to sign up for the $8-
per-week plan. This is for Lifetime members who need motivation to
come each week. You pay $8 per week instead of $10.95 per week. You
can discontinue the plan at any time, but while you are participating
you pay $8 and you do pay missed-week fees.

C) I believe that free registration will only last for a few more weeks.
Don't put it off if it is your intention to join.

D) You can read past "Changes" newsletters by cutting and pasting the
following address into your web browser.

Teens at the Table
By | Leslie Fink, MS, RD | 2/4/2003

I have friends who tell me that losing weight while cooking for their
families became much easier once they gave up the notion of cooking everyone
a different meal.

So hang up your short-order cook cap and think about cooking meals in
layers. In other words, start with a healthy base that meets your needs and
add to it to meet the needs of your kids.

For instance, make a lean ground turkey filling for tacos. Enjoy yours in a
fat-free tortilla and buy regular tortillas or taco shells (and plenty of
them!) for your kids. Serve toppings separately so you can use a small
sprinkling of low-fat shredded cheese and a dollop of sour cream while your
children can pile on lots of them.

This same concept works well with homemade pizza. Let everyone create his or
her own masterpieces. Go heavy with the vegetables and light on the cheese
for your pie. Offer your kids additional toppings like low-fat sausage,
turkey pepperoni and extra cheese.

Other healthy eating ideas include:

Create a weekly family meal plan so you can tag-team similar preparation
techniques and cooking processes. This way you can cut up vegetables for
Monday’s pasta primavera and Tuesday’s fajitas all at once. And you can
roast two chickens on Sunday so you have enough for chicken pizzas on Monday
and low-fat chicken salad sandwiches later in the week.

Enlist the help of your freezer. Teach your kids to pack up leftovers that
they can reheat on their own later. Stash – or buy – some low POINTS® meals
for yourself, too. You’ll love having them on hand when your boys decide to
bring home three large extra-cheese pizzas.

Rely on store-bought staples so you always have healthy snacks around.
Although bags of baby carrots, fresh vegetables from the salad bar and cut
up fruit may cost more than they would in their “natural” states. The extra
cost may be worth the convenience. Then there’s no excuse not to have low
POINTS and no POINTS foods at your fingertips.

Get your kids accustomed to baked chips with salsa and fruit smoothies for
snacks so there will be less junk food temptations in the house.

Shop smartly: If your kids claim that they just can’t live without greasy
chips, buy them flavors that you don’t like. (Potato chips are my weakness
but salt and vinegar chips don’t tempt me.)

Encourage them to try to eat something “your way.” While I am not saying to
put your kids on a weight loss diet, there’s no reason why they can’t enjoy
something lower in fat and calories from time to time.
