From pcbarko at illinois.edu Wed Aug 21 17:09:45 2019 From: pcbarko at illinois.edu (Barko, Patrick) Date: Wed, 21 Aug 2019 17:09:45 +0000 Subject: [Bikecoop-announce] Bike Project - Monthly Newsletter - August Message-ID: [The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign Logo] Monthly Newsletter for August 2019 Greetings fellow members of The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign Here are the announcements for the month of August 2019 NOTE: Going forward, we will be making a few changes to the monthly newsletter. The newsletter will come out in the first week of every month and in addition to announcements related to scheduled meetings and events, it will also include announcements related to the previous member meeting. This will give members more advanced notice of any planned meetings/events, more timely notification of changes in shop policy, and more time to comment on agenda items for the next meeting. General Member Meeting - Monday August 26th at 6:30 PM We will gather in the Downtown Urbana Shop at the Independent Media Center (202 S Broadway Ave, Urbana, IL 61801). All active members are encouraged to participate in the discussion and vote on agenda items. To view the meeting agenda and minutes from previous meetings visit: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B2CdyLRvevIvM2U0SnA3d0dwUjQ If you would like to add a comment to the agenda, please send the information to: contact at thebikeproject.org. Please note that the agenda is officially closed 7 days before each meeting. After the agenda has closed, no new comments or proposals can be added. We Need Volunteers! Interested in learning more about bicycles? Want to give back to your local cycling community? We are need of volunteers who can commit to helping staff the Downtown Urbana Shop once every 1-2 weeks. As a volunteer staffer you would help open the shop, assist members with repairs, refurbish bicycles for sale, and handle sales of bicycles and parts. You do not need to have experience as a bicycle mechanic to enlist as a volunteer staffer. In fact, becoming a volunteer is one of the best ways to learn more about bicycle repair and maintenance! If you are unable to commit to regular volunteer duties, we could still use your help around the shop. Stop by during open hours and ask one of the staffers how you can lend a hand. Please contact us at contact at thebikeproject.org if you are interested in volunteering or have any questions. Also, please consider attending our upcoming volunteer orientation session on August 29th from 6-6:30 PM in the Downtown Urbana shop. Upcoming Events Don't forget to follow our page on Facebook for updates about upcoming summer bike rides and other community events! Fix-a-Flat Classes on Thursdays and Fridays: In this class we will cover how to change out a flat tire, the anatomy of your wheel, and how to patch an inner tube puncture! This is both a demonstration and hands-on course. All tools and supplies will be provided. Location: Campus Bike Center (608 E Pennsylvania Ave., Champaign, IL) Time: 11am – 12pm Thursdays: 9/5/19 and 11/7/19 Fridays: 10/4/19 and 12/6/19 Women and Trans Folk Night The next Women and Trans Folk night will be on Monday, September 2nd, 2019 from 6:30–9:00 PM at TBP in Urbana. Women and Trans Folk Night is exclusively reserved for women and trans (including non-binary) people to learn about bike maintenance from other women and trans mechanics. Update Your Build-A-Bike Tags and Remove Personal Items Please update your Build-A-Bike tags, as a great number have expired. Remember that each time you work on your Build-A-Bike, update the tag with that day’s date. This functions as the “last day worked on” date. If this is ever more that two weeks (14 days) old, the bike is assumed to have been abandoned and is available for other purposes, like a Build-A-Bike for someone else, or a refurbished bike. Also remember that there is a strict limit of 14 days for storage of personal bicycles or parts. In the coming weeks, we will be sorting through all bikes in the shop. Any Build-A-Bikes with an outdated tag will released for and can be used for other purposes. Any unlabeled or outdated personal bikes or parts will become property of the shop. Fun Facts and Miscellany Bicycle Commuting Saves Lives: Bicycle commuting is associated with an approximately 50% reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, compared with “non-active” forms of transportation (e.g. driving or riding the bus). This is according to a recent study (https://www.bmj.com/content/357/bmj.j1456?tab=related#datasupp) in the British Medical Journal. Commuting by walking is also associated with a lower risk of these diseases but cycling has a greater benefit. In individuals that commuted by cycling, those with the longest commuting distance had the lowest risk of heart disease and cancer. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
