From pcbarko at illinois.edu Wed Oct 2 18:45:50 2019 From: pcbarko at illinois.edu (Barko, Patrick) Date: Wed, 2 Oct 2019 18:45:50 +0000 Subject: [Bikecoop-announce] The Bike Project Newsletter - October Message-ID: [The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign Logo] Monthly Newsletter for October 2019 [cid:image002.png at 01D57927.B375E0B0] Greetings fellow members of The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign Here are the announcements for the month of October 2019 We Need Volunteers! We are critically short of volunteers to staff open hours in the Downtown Urbana shop. If we are unable to recruit additional volunteers, we may be forced to reduce the number of open hours available for members. We are need of volunteers who can commit to helping staff the Downtown Urbana Shop once every 1-2 weeks. As a volunteer staffer you would help open the shop, assist members with repairs, refurbish bicycles for sale, and handle sales of bicycles and parts. You do not need to have experience as a bicycle mechanic to enlist as a volunteer staffer. In fact, becoming a volunteer is one of the best ways to learn more about bicycle repair and maintenance! If you are unable to commit to regular volunteer duties, we could still use your help around the shop. Stop by during open hours and ask one of the staffers how you can lend a hand. Please contact us at contact at thebikeproject.org if you are interested in volunteering or have any questions. Meetings General Member Meeting: All active members are encouraged to participate in the discussion and vote on agenda items. Update Your Build-A-Bike Tags and Remove Personal Items Remember to update the tag on your Build-A-Bike with that day?s date each time you work on it. This functions as the ?last day worked on? date. If this is ever more that two weeks (14 days) old, the bike is assumed to have been abandoned and is available for other purposes, like a Build-A-Bike for someone else, or a refurbished bike. There is a strict limit of 14 days for storage of personal bicycles or parts. Any unlabeled or outdated personal bikes or parts will become property of the shop. Help Us Raise Money ? Amazon Smile Like any non-profit organization, we need to continually raise funds to support our programs. These funds are used to purchase new tools and parts for the shops and to support community outreach efforts. You can help us raise money through the Amazon Smile program. Visit http://smile.amazon.com/ and list The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign as your beneficiary. Next time you need to place an order on Amazon use http://smile.amazon.com/ and a small donation will be made to TBP. You will not have to pay anything for the donation, it is made by Amazon. Fun Facts and Miscellany [cid:image003.png at 01D57927.B375E0B0] According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the longest tandem bicycle stretches to an incredible 135 feet, 10.7 inches and has 20 seats. The bicycle was built by mechanical engineering students at the University of South Australia and took 9 months to plan and build https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2018/1/video-classics-seven-riders-attempt-to-ride-worlds-longest-bicycle-510176. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKvLaIWWmOA&feature=youtu.be The rear drum wheel seems like cheating to me, but whatever?thaaaaaaat?s a long bicycle! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The bike was stolen from my garage around 6:35PM this evening. I included a quick copy/paste from my build sheet below. I suppose the TL;DR is that if you see someone riding around on a Schwinn High Sierra with Tubus racks, a full dynamo setup, dirt drops and a SRAM 2x10 groupset I would ask that you contact the requisite authorities. I assume someone will find the lock dumped somewhere as one of the panniers was already found and returned from Hessel Park.
