We are critically short of volunteers to staff open hours in the Downtown Urbana shop. If we are unable to recruit additional volunteers, we may be forced to reduce the number of open hours available for members. We are need of volunteers who can commit to helping staff the Downtown Urbana Shop once every 1-2 weeks. As a volunteer staffer you would help open the shop, assist members with repairs, refurbish bicycles for sale, and handle sales of bicycles and parts. You do not need to have experience as a bicycle mechanic to enlist as a volunteer staffer. In fact, becoming a volunteer is one of the best ways to learn more about bicycle repair and maintenance! If you are unable to commit to regular volunteer duties, we could still use your help around the shop. Stop by during open hours and ask one of the staffers how you can lend a hand. Please contact us at contact at thebikeproject.org if you are interested in volunteering or have any questions. Also, please consider attending our upcoming volunteer orientation sessions on September 26th from 6-6:30pm in the Downtown Urbana shop. TBP Must bring your bike to get lights. Date: October 3rd Time: 4 – 7pm. Locations: Alma Mater and Hallene Gateway (corner of Lincoln and Illinois). Women and Trans Folk Night Women and Trans Folk Night (WTF) is exclusively reserved for women and trans (including non-binary) people to learn about bike maintenance from other women and trans mechanics. Open hours for WTF occur on the first Monday of each month in the Downtown Urbana shop from 6:30-9:00 PM. The next Women and Trans Folk night will be on Monday, September 2nd. Update Your Build-A-Bike Tags and Remove Personal Items Please update your Build-A-Bike tags, as a great number have expired. Remember that each time you work on your Build-A-Bike, update the tag with that day’s date. This functions as the “last day worked on” date. If this is ever more that two weeks (14 days) old, the bike is assumed to have been abandoned and is available for other purposes, like a Build-A-Bike for someone else, or a refurbished bike. Also remember that there is a strict limit of 14 days for storage of personal bicycles or parts. In the coming weeks, we will be sorting through all bikes in the shop. Any Build-A-Bikes with an outdated tag will released for and can be used for other purposes. Any unlabeled or outdated personal bikes or parts will become property of the shop. Help Us Raise Money – Amazon Smile Like any non-profit organization, we need to continually raise funds to support our programs. These funds are used to purchase new tools and parts for the shops and to support community outreach efforts. You can help us raise money through the Amazon Smile program. Visit http://smile.amazon.com/ and list The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign as your beneficiary. Next time you need to place an order on Amazon use http://smile.amazon.com/ and a small donation will be made to TBP. You will not have to pay anything for the donation, it is made by Amazon. Fun Facts and Miscellany [Susan B. Anthony] “Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.” Susan B. Message-ID: Hello, Light the Night 2019 is coming, this October 3! With 3 hours to install over 1,100 free bike light sets, we'll need a good-sized crew of volunteers. This will be the twelfth (!) year in a row for Light the Night. We've seen big improvements in safe night biking around here, but -- in part thanks to the excellent and continuing trend toward more bicyclists on the streets -- there's still a lot of work to do. You can sign up for a ~1.5-hour or 3-hour shift here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1T6r2OCt4wS66DzkYOO6M7mXE-iDp38DTFhVj2RreR6c/edit?usp=sharing Volunteering is generally a lot of fun -- the crowds are very happy to get free bike lights! Light the Night 2019 Free Bike Light Giveaway Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m (volunteering from 3:45 to 7:00 pm). Location 1: Alma Mater (SE corner of Green St. and Wright St.) Urbana, IL Location 2: Corner of Illinois St. and Lincoln Ave. (near the Hallene Gateway) Urbana, IL Please volunteer for the 3:45 pm to 5:30 pm "early shift" if you can: lines are longest then; we're aiming to have more volunteers for the early shift to meet the demand. Early-shift volunteers: please note the 3:45 pm start time (i.e. not 4:00 pm); getting volunteers organized fifteen minutes early will help us get a jump on long lines. Optional training sessions: ---- There will be two chances to go to a short training session for those who haven't participated before, those who want a refresher, or those who want to practice with this year's models of lights: - Mon., Sept. 23, 2019, 6:00 pm--6:45 pm, at the Downtown Urbana Bike Project, 202 S. Broadway, Urbana, IL. (enter via south side basement door). - Thu., Oct. 3, 2019, 3:00 pm--3:45 pm, at Alma Mater (SE corner of Green St. and Wright, Urbana, IL) We will run a light-assembly / battery-install event (plus a second if needed) to get lights ready in advance: - Mon., Sept. 23, 2019, 7:00 pm--9:00 pm. Downtown Urbana Bike Project, 202 S. Broadway, Urbana, IL. (enter via south side basement door) - Possible second session: TBA About the giveaway: We'll be installing, completely free, over 1,110 "be seen" light sets -- some hard-mount Torch Bright 9X LED light sets, and some silicone strap LED light sets; that makes over 2,220 blinky lights, counting front and rear. Don't forget to tell your friends about the giveaway, but remind them: lights are only installed directly onto bikes. "If you want free lights, bring your bike." Light the Night 2019 is a program of Light the Night Organizing Group partners and affiliated groups. Hope you can volunteer!
