Greetings fellow members of The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign

Whew…the past several months has been a dumpster fire. As you probably have heard, the Bike Project has been closed since Governor Pritzker’s stay-at-home order was announced in March. Following state and local regulations, we have begun the process of reopening. Currently, we are offering limited service on an appointment-only basis.

Our Deepest Sympathies to Those Affected by COVID-19

The past several months have been difficult for all of us. The unprecedented coronavirus pandemic has changed nearly every aspect of our lives. Many of our friends and neighbors have lost beloved family members and friends. [cid:image003.png at 01D6903D.D587CD20] We all want to hold our loved ones close but must remain physically distanced from one another. Small businesses are closing, and millions have lost their jobs. There is no denying that we will not be the same when this is all over.

We, the volunteers at the Bike Project want to express our deepest sympathies to all who have suffered due to the pandemic. We will be there, riding and wrenching alongside you as we try to rebuild what we have lost.

Meetings

We have temporarily suspended member meetings. We plan to resume members meetings soon, using a remote format. Stay tuned to our website, Facebook, and future newsletters for more information.

COVID-19 Reopening Plans:

TBP has started the process of reopening for limited services. Earlier this summer we opened to the public on an appointment-only, trial basis on Wednesdays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The test of our appointment system was successful, but our reopening plans were delayed by the spike in COVID-19 cases on the U of I campus.

Campus Bike Center:
The Campus Bike Center is open--by appointment only! Please sign-up for appointments here using the following link and select “Make An Appointment Today”. https://campusrec.illinois.edu/programs/campus-bike-center/

Having issues signing up? For technical assistance, please email the shop manager at jacob84 at illinois.edu<mailto:jacob84 at illinois.edu> or call 217-300-4638.

Downtown Urbana (Independent Media Center) Location:
We plan to reopen the Downtown Urbana shop on an appointment-only basis in early October. Please visit our website (https://thebikeproject.org/) for updates and to schedule an appointment once we resume operations.

Please understand that we are operating at a reduced capacity with a very small crew of volunteers and student staffers. We are reopening cautiously to protect your health and the health of our community. Masks must be worn by all who enter Campus Bike Center and Downtown Urbana locations – No exceptions.

Events:

Light the Night 2020

Light the Night 2020 is here! The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and MTD are planning to organize Light the Night event. Each fall for the last 12 years, the member agencies of the Light the Night Organizing Group, along with volunteers, have installed 800 to 1,000 bike light sets on bikes in the Urbana-Champaign area.

This year, Light the Night will be held at three outside locations:

- Wright Street and Green Street, near the Alma Mater
- Lincoln Avenue and Illinois Street, near the Hallene Gateway
- Campus Bike Center at 51 E. Gregory Drive, Champaign

Date: September 24th
Time: 4 – 7p at all three locations.

We need Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers to help with the following tasks:

  1. Cleaning and organizing the shop
  2. Refurbishing bicycles for sale
  3. Help staff appointment-only hours

To limit the number of people in the shop, we will need to schedule all volunteer hours. If you are interested in volunteering, please send us an email: contact at thebikeproject.org<mailto:contact at thebikeproject.org>.
