Hi All,<br><br>I'm responding to this notification email directly, since Preston's (lengthy!) update to issue #430 doesn't seem to have been posted on redmine.<br><br>Some questions to better understand the physical mesh topology:<br>
<br>1. Preston mentioned the node 'RHI Wifi 3' daisy-chaining power to node 'RHI Wifi.' Assuming Wifi 3 is a Nanostation M2, are you using the 1amp POE injector? Please note the 0.5amp POE injectors normally included with Nanostations can not supply enough current for 2 devices; you have to buy the large 1amp injector.<br>
<br>2. I believe the Commotion-OpenWRT PR3 firmware, which I'm assuming both of these nodes are running, normally just bridges the secondary LAN of a Nanostation with the encrypted, private AP. I don't believe the firmware will correctly route over a direct wired link between 2 nodes; it assumes nodes only mesh with each other wirelessly. Did you make any custom firewall / routing config changes to acknowledge this wired link? Without any custom config, daisy-chaining the 2 nodes like this may be causing redundant / confused routes.<br>
<br>3. Instead of having RHI Wifi draw power from the 2nd LAN port on RHI Wifi 3, could you see how things work with RHI Wifi powered independently?<br><br>4. Assuming these two RHI nodes are broadcasting on the same channel, how far apart are they spaced physically? If they're very close together and running at full TX power, possibly they're interfering?<br>

<p>I got the following output from a NetGear router directly that receives its WAN connection from a Commotion PR3 node, RHI WiFi 3, on top of the Red Hook Initiative. The Internet had been very intermittent for a while, and I tried to poke around the mesh to find out if there was a bad link, but couldn't find why this router couldn't reach the Internet. I then unplugged and re-plugged RHI WiFi 3 (which daisy-chains power to another critical link, RHI WiFi, on top of the auto body shop three doors to the north) and then ran the commands Ben suggested. All network output, before and after the power cycle, is below with some annotations.</p>

Pinging<br>Please describe what behavior you expected: As per standard OLSR routing<br>behavior (or so I thought), nodes that are topographically (hop-wise) closer<br>to a much higher bandwidth internet gateway should be routing internet<br>
requests to this gateway instead of a gateway more hops away (with much lower<br>bandwidth). Unless this isn't how QoS value is measured when finding gateways<br>via Smart Gateway (<a href="https://wiki.freifunk.net/OLSR/SmartGateway" target="_blank">https://wiki.freifunk.net/OLSR/SmartGateway</a> ?)<br>
Please describe what behavior you experienced that you believe is wrong:<br>There are three internet gateways in the Red Hook mesh topology – two of<br>these gateways are accessed via 5ghz point to point links with Brooklyn Fiber<br>
(providing extremely fast fiber access), wired directly to Commotion nodes<br>(via PoE network adapters). The nodes that are directly wired to these Fiber<br>gateway nodes do route internet requests through the fiber.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, nodes that are one hop away from these Commotion Fiber<br>gateways are not routing to their nearest neighbor (that also has a much<br>higher bandwidth), but instead routing to the satellite internet gateway<br>
which is multiple hops and/or much lower ETX value.</p>
<p>The tangible behavior we've observed, has been that a node will ping to an<br>internet IP, fluctuating between gateways (every third ping or so, will match<br>an average ping from the satellite, while the other pings seem more aligned<br>
with the an average fiber ping). After 15 seconds of pinging, the node will<br>drop all ping requests for another 25 seconds or so, then start pinging<br>between the gateways again. (No traceroute was performed, unfortunately, but<br>
this behavior has occurred more than once on separate occasions).</p>
