However, there is not internet or phone service providers. We were interested in setting up a mesh network, is it possible without any source if internet? Commotion does not require an internet connection. Basically you'll need a couple of laptops or computers running Unix but there are prepacked images around. You may need an email server and there is an open-source telephone exchange which can work with smartphones. Commotion only gives you the network. Other options would be one of the mesh messaging systems floating around android. The big question is how much technical support do you have on the ground? HOT maybe able to assist. Wifi can be beamed but typically a Wifi router will only reach 100 meters. You'd need to set up a mast in each location to connect the villages to main source. It can be done but needs some expertise although that is now available on the internet.
