Please RSVP and join other UCIMC members, UI students and our
faculty partners from the School of Architecture, for two
Barnraising weekend construction projects in February. We'll be
building a new staffing area in the front lobby. Complete background
and details below.

No prior expertise or experience is required to volunteer, but if
you do have construction, carpentry, or other experience, we
welcome you!

This will be an ongoing partnership with the UI architecture
faculty, so we're also looking for materials donations and tools.
If you have leftover construction materials please contact us! You
can make a tax-deductible donation based on the estimated value of
the materials. Here are some of the things we're looking for:

2x4s and other construction quality lumber of various sizes

nails, screws, fasteners of various kinds, hinges, casters,
etc.

Plywood, OSB, pegboard, masonite, etc.

History & Background Information

In March 2010 the IMC was contacted by Stewart Hicks, one of 4
junior faculty members from the University of Illinois School of
Architecture, expressing interest in working with the IMC as a
community partner. They had visited the space for the IMC Filmfest,
and sought us out as a potential community partner organization.
Beth Simpson, Meme Polk, and myself, met with them to coordinate the
partnership, and wrote a letter of support for their grant
application to the UI Office of Public Engagement.

Their research is to design and complete building practical
projects, and then to write about it and publish about it for their
tenure review. The UCIMC benefits by having expert partners working
with us to design structures that will help us better use our first
floor space.

This fall they were awarded a grant for $15K to partner with the
UCIMC on this project.
