Shows Group

The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center Shows
Group brings the Indymedia spirit of openness and
community access to the local music scene. We can
help you get the information, equipment and support
that you need to bring your favorite bands to
Champaign-Urbana. The Shows group books everything
from folk to punk to goth to indie rock to
experimental and beyond.

People get involved at lots of different levels with
the shows group... some of us spend a couple hours a
week helping put up flyers, others take money at the
door during concerts, and some book entire shows
themselves. Don't worry if you don't know how to book
shows or run the sound board -- if you want to learn,
we'd love to teach you! We've even written a Booking
Manual to help you out.

To Get Involved:
- -Come to a shows group meeting any Thursday at 7 pm
- -Come to an IMC show, enjoy the music and introduce
yourself to the IMC staff

What you can do in the shows group:

- -Learn to set up equipment and run the sound board
at
a show
- -Learn to book and promote a show
- -Volunteer for security or door staffing at a show
and hear great music free
- -Help throw a major fesitival
- -Help apply for grants
- -Support and learn about the local music scene
- -Learn about and share new upcoming music with other
music fans
- -Review demo cds sent to the group... you get to
keep
them when you're done!
- -Review or preview show for the public I newspaper
- -Hang up posters around town
- -Hand out handbills at your school, workplace or
favorite hang out

What Happens at a Meeting?

Our meetings typically involve going over general
Shows Group issues, finding volunteers for upcoming
shows (see below), and distributing demos for people
to review. Meetings almost never last longer than an
hour.

What Happens at a Concert?

Volunteers arrive in the early evening to set up the
sound equipment at the venue before the bands show up
for soundchecks. We help the bands set up a table to
sell their merchandise, and then we set up the table
at the door, make sure there's change for the cash
box, and put out earplugs to sell and flyers for
upcoming shows. During the show, there is typically
one person who runs the sound, one person taking
money, and two or three people keeping an eye on
things inside and outside of the venue. At the end of
the night,
we tear down the equipment and clean up the space.
