Here's the agenda I said I'd send out... First the short version for
participants, then the long version for us.  Suggestions?

U-C IMC Orientation and Introduction
3/5/05 3-5PM

I. Welcome and Introductions (3:00, 15min)
a. Introduce self, IMC
b. Give outline of what's to come
c. Ask participants to introduce themselves, say:
 i. How the heard about the IMC
 ii. What brought them to the orientation

II. What the IMC Does (3:15, 15 min)
A few examples of UCIMC projects (all of which you'll hear more about later): 
 i. Interactive website: Recent reporting from RNC protest activity
(show if possible)
 ii. IMCRN every Monday at 5:30 on WEFT 90.1FM (listen to example)
 iii. Public i Monthly News paper (give out copies)
 iv. Video group has spots on UPTV (show clip)
 v. Shows group books indie bands
 vi. Librarians Books to Prisoners Project
b. Question?

III. What do you want do? (3:30 15 min)
a. Get Participants talking about their interests

IV. How the IMC Does what it Does: (3:45, 15 min)
a. General Membership
 i. Membership Supported
1. Membership keeps us rooted and accountable to the community
2. Decision making on future and direction of IMC at twice yearly
Membership Meetings
3. Only group that can make major decisions like:
a. buying, selling, or renting space
b. Entering into legal contracts
c. Changing, approving or dissolving structure
(thought the General Membership may delegate this responsibility to
steering or to a working group)
 ii. Member Benefits
1. Full participation in groups
2. Full use of facilities and equipment and library 
3. Keeps UCIMC afloat
 iii. Invitation for people to become members
1. Membership form is included in your packet
2. If you wish to become a member today; talk to someone from outreach
b. Steering group 
 i. meets monthly
 ii. not a board of directors but rather a place where working groups
cooperate on meeting the overall needs of the UCIMC.
 iii. Comprised of 1-2 empowered "spokes" from each working group, but
anyone can come and participate fully.
 iv. Responsible for decisions & overall financials that affect more
than one Working Group, or a decision that is not affiliated with any
particular working group.
c. Working groups
 i. Responsible for the day-to-day activities of the IMC
 ii. Each has area of responsibility
 iii. Has decision making power for area
 iv. Meets at least monthly
 v. Working groups not set in stone – they're created and dissolve
based on interests of people involved
 vi. Emphasize groups as learning opportunity
d.  Principles behind this structure:
 i. Give all members the right to speak and participate is all UCIMC
activities meetings and decision making.
 ii. No group or individual has power over another group or individual
 iii. Decisions are made in person, in public meeting
 iv. Decisions are made by consensus of all people attending a meeting. 
e. Consensus Democracy
 i. The fundamental operation procedure behind consensus is to obtain
the consent of all participants.
 ii. A person consents to a proposal, decision or action when she is
willing to allow it to happen without concerns that the decision might
harm the UCIMC or its members.
 iii. Consent does not necessarily equal endorsement
