I would change the order of the wording to emphasize the differences
between an event and a story..<br>
<h3>To promote an <span><em>upcoming event:</em></span></h3>
<p>Create a "<a href="http://www.ucimc.org/node/add/community-event">Community
Event</a>" or "<a href="http://www.ucimc.org/node/add/event">UCIMC
Event</a>" if you would like the event to appear in our
calendars and/or upcoming events listing. You may also submit it
as a <em>story</em>, but <i>a story should provide additional
background or contextual information beyond the event
announcement</i> you submit.<br>
</p>

I've added some additional formatting and clarifying

Can others take a look and comment? Do these instructions more

Hey all,<br>
<br>
Don't know if there's an easy solution to this, but
there's been three posts in the last few days as
"local interest" which should be "upcoming events."<br>
I'm afraid a few folks have formed a (good) habit of
posting their events at <a moz-do-not-send="true"
href="http://ucimc.org" target="_blank">ucimc.org</a>
but don't notice the new format.<br>
Can anything be done?<br>
