News-Gazette, Friday, October 27, 2000, p. C12

Anne Cook attended the ADM shareholders' meeting in Decatur and reported on it from a mostly-corporate perspective. She noted that profits are still very high and that the company "trimmed spending on facilities" but that executive salaries remain very high. She then listed all the top salaries. She also pointed out that the ADM board didn't say anything about its two former board members who are now in jail for price fixing.

But it seems to me that the big story should have been about genetically engineered food:

"Mary Jeanne Lindinger-Olsen, representing the Catholic Diocese of Joliet, and Sister Linda Hayes of Springfield, represnting the Sisters of St. Dominic, brought up another issue, the company's links with genetically engineered products.

"Lindinger-Olsen said the issue has troubling religious, ethical, and business reprecussions.

"A proposal submitted by the two religious orders calling for the board to remove genetically engineered crops, organizms, or products until testing confirms safety was defeated."

A follow-up story on the nuns and GMOs might be interesting, and it could probably find a place in the Octopus.
