Associate professor of journalism at New York University.  Author of Within
the Veil: Black Journalists, White Media published in 2000 by New York
University Press.

Professor Newkirk is a contributing columnist for The Nation and a
contributing writer at Artnews. She has also written extensively for The New
York Times, The Washington Post, Essence and The Media Studies Journal.

Prior to joining the faculty at New York University, she was a staff writer
at New York Newsday where she was part of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team in
1992.  She also worked as a Capitol Hill correspondent (Gannett News Service
and USA Today) and as a correspondent in South Africa for The New York Post.
