Laura Hershey
In-residence at Unit One/Allen Hall

Laura Hershey is a disability rights leader and poet. She educates and
agitates whenever possible to promote the rights of people with
disabilities. Her efforts have earned her a President's Award, a Watson
Fellowship, a Colorado College honorary degree, a World Institute on
Disability Fellowship, and several trips to jail for acts of civil
disobedience. Hershey's programs address the ways the disability rights
movement has the potential to challenge, expand, and transform political
action in the United States.

Disabilities Act at Beckwith Hall, 201 E. John St. Champaign
		9pm - Cure Society, Not Me: Reframing Disability as a Civil
Rights Issue

Tuesday, January 30
		8pm - "When Billy Broke His Head... And Other Tales of
Wonder" Movie and discussion

Wednesday, January 31
		5pm - Poetry Dinner - bring poetry to read and listen to
Laura Hershey's poetry in the Allen Hall private dining room
		7pm - Piss on Pity; A Critique of Charity

Thursday, February 1
		7pm - Matters of Life and Death: Medical Discrimination,
Health Care Rationing and Assisted Suicide
		9pm - Leaving All Closets Behind! Coming Out As Disabled,
Coming Out As Queer, Coming Out As Whatever... Discussion of the Politics of
Visibility/Invisibility

Friday, February 2
		5pm - Dinner sponsored by 4 South in the Allen Private
Dining Room

All programs are open to the public and take place in the South Rec Room of
Allen Hall, 1005 W. Gregory, Urbana unless noted. Allen Hall is wheelchair
accessible. For information or to request a sign language interpreter,
