next meeting July 29 11am will brainstorm--

news group--decided to ask weft for remaining news hour timeslots (thru
9/10); have a group of people helping pauline with the Life in the Bike
Lane drop-in; got a piece produced by Danielle broadcast on Free Speech
Radio News (meetings Sundays at 1:15)

tech--Wed at 7: open design meeting to get input about the website--will
update Active (software that runs the website) afterwards. Zach who hosts
the website is gradually running out of discspace--tech plans to buy 2 new
harddrives--one with Zach and one at the IMC (as a kind of backup) Hard
drives are about $80 a piece. Putting togehter a file server, so that
people could keep files here to work on and take stress off of Sergei.

Lib group--decided to expand cataloging system--now it's done by broad
category area; expanding from 7 to 10 catergories. The tech writing
students will write this up; they'll also write a brochure specifically
for the lib. lib website is layed out--there'll be a section on
research--environment e.g. Databases in each section.

Mark asks lib group about way of archiving stories; Mike suggests
newstories still not getting on the website, and that would be a quick way

Print--family based printer: Villa Grove (not a union printer, but the
cost of the union alternative was prohibitive--difference of about $500
per month and a further distance).
First issue will have 5000 copies.

Finance--Mike's leaving town and Sascha's still in Brazil--Russ has the
checkbook.

old biz:

outreach?
finance? let Ellen know by 24th. (spoke is default)

tech policy
proposed by Paul R. To define how IMC equipment can be used and who uses
it. 1) public use equipment (should not be removed from IMC except for
repair) 2) member-use equipment checkout depends on needs of working
groups and fragility of equipment. Tech group is mainly responsible for
equipment maintenance, special restrictions, checkout mechanism and
training.

Brian--concern with news group bumping him off his own computer without
advance notice the word 'exclusive' special acknowledge owners control
over equipment.

Proposed revision: news group has exclusive use for determined time
periods; and loaners of equipment

Accepted.

Staffing
russ will meet with pat henry from urbana league employee training
program--questions to be answered: supervision, liability...

School of Americas protest proposal--prposed by Amnesty International and
PRC are insterested in building up a core group and then do outreach and
training for other people to go. Nov 16-18. PRC will probably get funding
help and housing. Mike L there might be a world bank meeting in November
(the week before). Paul R. -- good to have people here at IMC to take
phone calls for reports (like we did with quebec city) -- people have been
complimentary of that effort

new business:
quad day. Aaron will be there as part of Civic Action and is happy to
promote IMC as well. Mike L will help with that. Aug. 21, 10am-3pm. Paul R
also. They provide the tables. If you're interested in helping contact
Aaron.

Fundraising proposal.
Paul R has had a concern -- IMC has done targeted fundraising, which is
good, but afraid it dilutes overall fundraising. Paul thinks the funding
should come back to overall IMC. Proposes that we determine some
percentage out of net for any fundraiser, say 25%, that would go toward
IMC general. Mike is afraid of getting stuck on one proposal that might
not address the whole fundraising status of IMC. Some might not be
inclined to put as much energy into the fundraising project?
Ellen--print project needs ongoing funding. Would rather set aside
amount over target.
Russ--afraid of targeted fundraising because things like rent don't have
the attention getting features of launching a newspaper.
Ellen--the general fund doesn't have the ability to fund a number of
things; groups have been told that it's up to them to fund projects.
Mike--I agree we've got to address the problem as a whole, the overall
fundraising--suggests consulting with Sascha and Sarah since that know the
most about this.
Paul--requests his proposal be kept as continuing old business.

Paul R: News group and print group "chasm"--we don't have a news group
that's conmprehensive--the news group has been a radio group, and the
print group is a print group.

Ellen: A news steering group? with print and audio groups

print correlate
radio column in the public i
more cross posting to imc-news and imc-print groups
--
Mike P brings up finding a more democratic way of deciding what stories
get into the center of the page. Have news group deal with it? Have a
voting on the web.
