IMCers,

Danielle has already reported to you about what a great expereince the
Grassroots Radio Coalition Conference was in Boulder. I agree! The sessions
were dominated by public affairs topics and creating good solid reporting
and documentaries. Danielle taped these nuts and bolts sessions and I am
making dubs (almost done, Danielle). Her intention is to make these tapes
available for check out.

I'm forwarding below a note I sent to WEFT that's more generally about the
GRC in case you do not already know how to subscribe to the GRC listserv.
There is much discussion on the GRC list about the connection between and
among IMCers and community radio.

Subject: Connect with others

Hi, all.

Did you know that there's a way to connect with others who volunteer at
community radio stations across the country? There's an informal
organization called the Grassroots Radio Coalition (GRC) and it has a
listserv.

The GRC is comprised of people just like you who love community radio and
volunteer to keep the music, news, and public affairs from a local
perspective on the air.

Each year since 1996 (that's when Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act
of 1996 that took the public airwaves away from the people and gave them to
the corporations) the GRC has held a conference at a different community
radio station. This year's conference was in Boulder and was hosted by KGNU
(they have new studios and girl/boy are they nice!). Last year's was in
Madison. Next year's conference is at WEFT (just kidding, Mick, don't have a
heart attack!).

Topics discussed at this year's conference included: documentary
production, FCC and regulatory issues (including indecency), media activism,
youth radio, how to get and keep volunteers, the musical mission of
community radio, sustainable fundraising, covering globalization, hosting a
daily news program, low power fm, the Pacifica struggle, community radio and
independent media centers, and audio production. Keynote speakers were Amy
Goodman, David Barsamian, and Juan Gonzalez. Aaron Glant of Free Speech
Radio News and Philip Babich of Making Contact were also there and presented
workshops.

Danielle (chyn at onthejob.net), Sehvilla (anlystrlz at advancenet.net), Sarah
(amethesky at angelfire.com)), Lori Serb (laserb at hotmail.com) and I attended
this year's conference (had to pay our own way). We didn't get to attend
all of the panels, but we have notes from each of them. We may try to
present something to the Associates and volunteers (we're discussing this).
In the meantime, feel free to contact us about what we learned if you can't
wait for something formal to be organized.

And, if you'd like be part of the GRC listserv, just send an email to the
listserv's owner; tell him you're from WEFT and that your WEFT colleagues
told you how great the GRC conference was. The listserv owner's name and
email:

MichaelP [papadop at PEAK.ORG]

Let me just warn you music-only lovers that most of the discussion has been
(in the year I've been on) about public affairs and news, the Pacifica
battle, and FCC regulations. The listserv could stand, in my opinion, to
have more discussions about music and community radio. There's room for it
all!

Perhaps we can work now on a scholarship fund so different WEFTies can go to
next year's conference (location tba)?
