STEERING GROUP MEETING MINUTES: 9.30.01

Attending:  Mark Enslin (facilitating), Russ Riebecki, Aaron Koonsman, 
Matthew Berilyant, Ellen Knutson, Eric Hiltner, Mike Lehman, Sascha 
Meinrath, Pauline Bartolone, Brent McDonald (notetaker).

I. SPACE
  A) IMC has new doorstop.
  B) 8 old computer monitors need to be disposed of;
Pauline voluteered to take them.
  C) Eric is going to help build new shelves.
  D) PRC offered to donate their magazine racks from IDF

II. PRINT
  A) October issue is in final layout.
  B) Numbers of editors is dwindling; there's a need to re-vitalize group 
and possibly re-structure.

III. LIBRARY
  A) All non-subscription periodicals have been removed from magazine rack 
and stacked on shelves.  There's now space for new subscriptions.
  B) UCIMC Lib now has it's own website at <urbana.indymedia.org/library>.  
Excellent tool for searching the archive.
  C) Also, on the main UCIMC site, there's a list of sites for information 
on 9.11 and the aftermath.

IV.  NEWS
  A) Continuing discussion of WEFT's programming arrangement with Monday IMC 
Newshour and the FreeSpeechRadioNews segment.

V.  FINANCE
  A) Finances okay despite a shortfall of $200-400 of founding funders 
monthly deposits.
  B) Call for donations to new audio work station!
  C) Need to re-vamp budgets ending this fiscal year.
  D) Note to train more ecomomic use of minidiscs.

VI.  OUTREACH (Oct. Regional Gathering)
  A) IMC Regional Gathering scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 19-21.
  B) 50-100 persons expected to attend.
  C) Strong need for people to volunteer housing for registered visitors 
(attn: Brian Hagy).
  D) Help needed to organize and plan event.  All interested in helping 
should attend weekly outreach meetings, Sunday, 11am @ IMC.

APPROPRIATE USE POLICY for UCIMC Newswire

Approved by concensus!

Ongoing discussion for additions or alterations pertaining to improving 
decision-making processes (i.e. further entrusting web-editor to do as 
necessary to hide, edit or delete any post deemed inappropriate).

Suggestion to change "Administration" link on main page to "Hidden Posts" so 
as to make more accessible while denoting as inappropriate for main 
Newswire.

Mike L. reads Seattle IMC mission statement as good standard for making 
value judgements of content.

SARAH K AND COMMUNITY RESPONSE

Need for "letter of clarification" to counter News-Gazette article posing 
that Sarah's project was associated with the U-C IMC.

Mike L., Brent M. and Pauline B. volunteered to collaborate in drafting a 
letter with Sarah to be posted promptly to IMC website and submitted to the 
News-Gazette.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Danielle C.--City of Urbana no longer permits IMC to have sandwich board on 
sidewalk (apparently, due to recent complaints).
