"Alternative Education and Urban Youth Activism"
Thursday, March 7 at 8pm in the Allen Hall South Rec Room, 1005 W. Gregory,
Urbana

Join us for a discussion with students and teachers from Prologue Alternative
High School in Chicago, a 30-year old school committed to social justice and
providing opportunities for students who were not able to make it through high
school in the Chicago Public School system. These students help to create their
own curriculum in an environment which values respect, cooperation, and
collective decision-making. The school's primary focus is to help the students
think about the real world and how they can change it. Currently the students
are involved in activist projects around saving Prologue from being kicked out
of its location, fighting for affordable housing, and building stronger
programs for youth in the community. The students and teachers will discuss
their experiences with alternative education and community activism, growing up
in an urban environment, and share some of the curriculum they have created.
