Urbana-Champaign Steering Group Minutes for 9-15-02

Present: Sascha M., Mike L., Russ R., Brian H., Ellen K., and three member of Students for Improving the Lives of Animals - Lindsey, Loren, and Danelle

MISSING SPOKES: TECH, RADIO NEWS, PRINT, AND SHOWS

Endorsement were discussed first.

The steering Group concensed pending any blocking concerns from missing spokes the endorsement of the Students for Improving the Lives of Animals campaign to give UI students the right to an non-animal alternative to dissection.  This is to be a UCIMC Steering Committee endorsement not a UCIMC endorsement as the steering group can not speak for the membership.  This group is a non-violent animal welfare group which recently had success improving the conditions of the dogs in the dog lab.

The Steering Group concensed pending any objection from the missing spokes co-sponsorship of the Illinois Disciples Foundation of talk or teach-in featuring human rights defender Eldor Sanchez (sp?)  This is to be a UCIMC Steering Committee endorsement not a UCIMC endorsement as the steering group can not speak for the membership.  

The Steering Group concensed to post a story on forward to people who might be interested an Equadorian group's request to have us raise $500 to fund the mobilization of people to a meeting of free trade participants in Ecuador

Working Group Reports.

Space-  built wall, need drywall compound and more paint.  Need help painting, will paint Monday at 5:30.  No keys left and need to get keys returned.  Mike L. and Russ R. will contact some key-holder individually.

Librarians- New meeting time, every Tues. at 8pm.   Much interest by new people.

Finance- Still running a deficit.  Closer to tapping into endowment.  Show are helping financial situation, but can't rely on shows.

Membership meeting- Letter will be sent to all member with invitation to meeting and description of the progress of the working groups.  THE WORKING GROUPS ARE TO WRITE THIS AND SUBMIT IT TO ELLEN BY NEXT STEERING GROUP MEETING!!!  Letter is to emphasize that meeting is to address the funding crisis, buying the building, and that there may not be an UCIMC if the funding crisis is not resolved.  General funds to pay for mailing.

Shows- 12 people attending.  Hidive will help postering for free admittance of postering people.  A lot of shows coming up.

Tech- new web site working.  Under "How to Use this Site" we will rewrite to eliminate "racist propaganda" from "While offering an empowering capability to users traditionally ignored by the mainstream media, the newswire also provides a completely open forum for viewpoints that may be in direct conflict with the focus of the editorial collective -- anything from racist propaganda to opinions that merely reinforce the views propagated by the mainstream media."  So as to not encourage racist propaganda.
