*Cameron Whitten Emerges as Fourth Major Candidate in Portland Mayoral Race*

There was a sense of acceptance in the crowd during New Seasons co-founder
Eileen Brady’s performance at Candidates Gone Wild, where she invited
Mayoral Candidate Cameron Whitten in a joint appearance, stating that he
will no longer be excluded from the democratic electoral process.

Cameron Whitten, endorsed by two prominent political parties in the area,
the Portland Green Party and the Oregon Progressive Party, is emerging on
the scene as the alternative candidate for Mayor to people who are
unsatisfied with the three options the media has advertised for them.

Despite a lack of air time at candidates forums, he has a large social
media viewing that grows everyday, with a Facebook page nearing 800 likes
and over 200 users actively talking about their choice for Portland’s next
Mayor.

Whitten is an inspiration for many Portland voters. His list of civic
service to Portland, most notably his leadership in the Occupy Portland
Movement, is long and diverse despite his young age. At 21 years old, he
intends on making history for the City of Portland by being Portland’s
First Black Mayor, and Youngest Mayor of a Metropolitan City in America.

The most important discussion Whitten brings is the issue of equity. When
it comes to the discussion of race and diversity, many of these questions
are directed towards the more privileged candidates, reflecting Portland’s
80% white population. Last night, Commissioner Amanda Fritz admitted on
stage that there is still a lot of racism in the City. It is because our
institutions and societal culture have failed to recognize the voice of
marginalized communities, and provide obstacles to make sure that people
from underserved backgrounds are not given a level playing field.

Fortunately, the Cameron Whitten for Unity campaign team is still at work
to address this issue, and the issue of Portlanders’ growing needs for a
new style of leadership. The other major candidates- Hales, Smith, and
Brady, have been paying a lot of attention to the things Whitten is saying
and doing, it is likely that the media soon be following suit as well.
