The <http://www.krannertcenter.com/performance.aspx?id=20127199102887128174107143> Opening Night Party<http://www.krannertcenter.com/performance.aspx?id=20127199102887128174107143> unites the community with phenomenal entertainment and ignites the exciting season of performances slated for 2012-13. Kicking it off on Saturday, September 8, is La Excelencia—a youthful and robust 11-piece salsa orchestra born of the Bronx and rooted in the powerfully percussive Latin sounds of the 1970s—when some of the band’s members were yet to be born. Fronted by Julián Silva and José Vázquez-Cofresí with a mix of musicians of Puerto Rican, Dominican, Colombian, Argentine-Ecuadorian, and Japanese descent, the band represents a new wave of salsa dura, or hardcore salsa—“full of powerful arrangements of free-flowing horns and lively percussion” (Latin Beat).

All ages are welcome at this evening-long celebration. In the Lobby, kids can pick up a free goodie bag and make tissue paper flowers with staff from The I.D.E.A. Store, and everyone can groove to DJ Fede’s spinning, visit the face-painting stations, and help Ella Dunn create a public ojo de dios. Outdoors, dance to the Brazilian sounds of Samba Soul in the Amphitheatre and scope out the tented zone featuring a rich variety of food for purchase from local vendors El Toro, Siam Terrace, Shanghai 1938, Caribbean Grill, Destihl, and Marble Slab Creamery.
