Why News Matters
March 13, 2012
An e-mail update from the McCormick
Foundation Journalism Program
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friends,
The Robert R. McCormick Foundation is pleased to announce a new Request for Ideas
(RFI) to promote news literacy to people of all ages and backgrounds throughout
the city of Chicago.
News literacy is the ability to use critical thinking skills to judge the reliability
and credibility of news reports and information sources. Training in news literacy
enables citizens to become smarter consumers and creators of fact-based information.
News literacy training also helps them develop informed perspectives and the navigational
skills to become effective participants in a digitally connected society.
In addition to news organizations and journalism education, we understand that many
agencies may be doing work that is compatible with news literacy. We are interested
in learning how such programs as standard literacy, computer training and workforce
development might integrate a news literacy component as part of their offerings.
