Artists for Guatemala Opening Reception

The opening reception for Guatemala is on Saturday, May 26th 2012 from
7:00pm to 10:00pm at indi go artist coop. It is free and open to the
public.

Artists for Guatemala is an opportunity for local (and not so local)
artists and art-buyers to donate to very worthwhile cause. All of the money
raised from the sale and auction of the artists' donated pieces will go
directly to aid impoverished Maya communities in Guatemala with Wuqu'
Kawoq: Maya Health Alliance. Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in
the western hemisphere, but it is the indigenous Maya populations who
experience the worst of the poverty and have little to no access to the
health and human services they need. The majority of these communities do
no speak Spanish, but rather 1 of over 20 different Mayan languages still
spoken in Guatemala. These communities experience widespread problems with
child malnutrition, adult chronic illness, maternal death, unclean water,
and lack access to the basic healthcare services every human needs due to
the fact that these services are only provided in Spanish and are often too
far away.

Wuqu' Kawoq: Maya Health Alliance is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit,
nongovernment organization that was founded in 2007 by a physician,
linguists, and development workers who realized that the language barrier
was enforcing the connection between ethnicity, poverty, and, ultimately,
poor health. Our mission is to provide healthcare and development services
to Maya communities in Guatemala in their first languages as well as bring
the services directly to the communities. We build sustainable,
community-based programs that provide crucial services to fight child
malnutrition, treat and manage chronic illnesses, combat maternal death,
provide water filters to ensure clean water, and educate women and
communities about their own health and services.
