Hello! Thanks to everyone who came out during the Art Theater Co-op's
inaugural week. We had a blast. It was fascinating to see the way the four
films of the past week spoke to one another, interweaving themes of power
and money, fame, and what a wacky place Florida is!

We've gotten some good press recently, particularly an excellent piece in *The
News Gazette* <http://www.des07.com/t/25132212/710432780/55045338/0/>. Extra,
extra, read all about us.

This week starts our Dangerous Docs Festival, which we couldn't be more
excited about. This festival includes five of this year's most acclaimed,
exciting documentaries; each one comes *very hi**ghly recommended*. Now, if
you hear the word "documentary" and reach for your pillow, think again: these
five films were chosen based on their power *as films* in addition to
offering challenging content. Read more about the Dangerous Docs Festival in
our press release here<http://www.des07.com/t/25132212/710432780/55045344/0/>
.

We are selling passes to the festival, in case you want to catch more than
one film (which I do recommend: there are a number of fascinating
connections between the themes, and this will be your *only chance *to
catch these incredible films before they hit video). Passes are $35
(adult), $25 (senior), and $30 (student).

See you all here this week!

This Is Not A Film* (Iran) (NR) (75 mins)
*This is Not a Film* was directed by Jafar Panahi, a successful Iranian
filmmaker who recently received a six-year prison sentence, as well as a
ban on making films & writing screenplays for 20 years. Read about Panahi
and his case on his Wikipedia
page<http://www.des07.com/t/25132212/710432780/55045569/0/>
.

In defiance of this artistic ban, Panahi recorded a video diary of himself
(mostly on his iPhone) under house arrest. It is an incredibly risky film
that inquires about the boundaries of art. The movie was finished, then put
on a flash drive and smuggled out of Panahi’s residence in a cake, after
which it was delivered to Cannes Film Festival.

*This Is Not A Film *has gotten incredible reviews. The film currently has
a 100% rating on Rotten
Tomatoes<http://www.des07.com/t/25132212/710432780/55045347/0/>.

"An act of political defiance, a moving personal document and a meditation
on what film is and can be.” -The San Francisco Chronicle*

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry *(U.S.) (R) (91 mins)
*Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry*, directed by Alison Klayman, is a look at the
hilarious and committed Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei as he works
on art projects and battles Chinese authorities. The most obviously fun
film at the festival, audiences will get to know & love Weiwei, whose
public persona is part dissident, part acclaimed artist, part rascal.

state of China today." -The Philadelphia Inquirer

Playing: Sat 7:30, Sun 12:00 noon, Weds 5:00, Thurs 5:00

*
The Imposter* (R) (U.K.) (99 mins)
*The Imposter*, directed by British director Bart Layton, is a gripping,
creepy thriller about Frederic Bourdin, who impersonated a missing Texas
boy in the 1990s. The film doesn't rely on a twist ending, as the facts of
the case are all in the public record. And yet *The Imposter *is
capable of surprising
and unsettling anybody, no matter how much you think you know.

The film currently has a 95% rating on Rotten
Tomatoes<http://www.des07.com/t/25132212/710432780/55045365/0/>.

“Layton's dazzling film is an exciting, edge-of-your-seat experience
superior to any Hollywood mystery you're likely to see for a long time.”
-The Philadelphia Inquirer

"*The Imposter* becomes more than just a missing-persons drama. It hints at
something much darker: a real-life horror story, the full truth of which
may never be known." -The Arizona Republic

Playing: Fri 10:00, Sat 10:00, Weds 7:30, Thurs 10:00*

The Island President *(U.S.) (PG) (101 mins)
The Island President documents then-President of the Maldives Mohamad
Nasheed (the "Mandela of the Maldives") as he battles climate change and
confronts the global power structure. Climate change is affecting the
Maldives more obviously than most: the tiny island nation is losing more of
its land to the rising seas every year.

The film contains a mixture of gorgeous cinematography and political
observation. There are a lot of documentaries about climate change, but
this is a very special one.

The film currently has a 98% rating on Rotten
Tomatoes<http://www.des07.com/t/25132212/710432780/55045367/0/>.

"Shenk expertly weaves Nasheed's extraordinary personal story together with
the Maldives' breathtaking natural beauty and a Capra-esque tale of dogged
idealism and political courage to create wonderfully vivid cinematic
portraiture." -The Washington Post

Playing: Sat 2:30, Sun 5:00, Mon 7:30, Weds 2:30

5 Broken Cameras* (Palestine/Israel) (NR) (90 mins)
An extraordinary, heartbreaking film, *5 Broken Cameras *started when
Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat bought a camcorder to film his fourth son
being born. Over the next five years, he ended up documenting—and
participating in—nonviolent resistance in his home town of Bil’in. The
film’s title refers to the destruction of each new camera Burnat purchases,
and his continuing need to document the destruction of his world and the
dogged hope of resistance.

After 5 years of filming, *5 Broken Cameras *was completed with the
assistance of Burnat’s close friend, Israeli filmmaker Guy Davidi.

The film currently has a 96% rating on Rotten
Tomatoes<http://www.des07.com/t/25132212/710432780/55045370/0/>.

that is universal and urgent, offering firsthand witness to events that are
too often portrayed as distant and impossible to understand." -Washington
