*A Geologist's Life: The Photography of Dr. William W. Shilts*
Part I: April 8th-10th; Part II: April 15th-17th, Part III: April
22nd-24th, 2013

Opening reception: April 8th, 6pm

Bill Shilts, a native of Hudson, Ohio, and graduate of DePauw, Miami (Ohio)
and Syracuse Universities, worked as a research Geologist at the Geological
Survey of Canada from his student days in the mid-sixties until arriving in
Champaign in 1995. Dr. Shilts served as the Chief of the Illinois State
Geological Survey from 1995-2008 and now is the Executive Director of the
University of Illinois Prairie Research Institute, which houses the five
State Scientific Surveys. During his career, he took thousands of
photographs of geological subjects and simply of scenery, landscapes and
people from his world, especially the Appalachian Mountains of southern
Quebec, the Canadian Tundra, and the glaciers of the high Canadian
Arctic. Although many of the photographs are taken from ground level, many
are from low altitude flights in helicopters, which Dr. Shilts used for
field transportation.

Working with photographer Joel Dexter, Dr. Shilts is digitizing his photo
collection, and Joel has selected approximately 150 images from the
collection to share with the public in three, three-day expositions on
April 8-10, 15-17, and 22-24.

Please join us for an opening reception April 8th, 6pm. Dr. Shilts will
give a short talk and music will be provided by Robin Kearton, Tom Faux and
Sam Payne.
