Beyond Mass Incarceration

Community Talk Series Takes First Step for Change

WHAT: For millions, mass incarceration is very much a part of daily life. People
on the local, state, and national levels are working hard to abolish the racist
and profiteering processes that put America behind bars. This fall, the University
YMCA's Friday Forum lecture series will bring to the forefront the experiences and
work of people deeply committed to not only bringing these inequities to light,
but engaging people in reform, including funding alternatives to incarceration.

The Fall 2013 Friday Forum lecture series theme, Rethinking Security: Beyond Mass
Incarceration, will peer deeply into current issues revolving around incarceration
and will feature expert views on current issues at the local, state, and national
levels. Speakers for the series include, but are not limited to Darrell Cannon,
Erica Meiners and prominent scholar and political activist, Angela Davis.

WHY: The University YMCA strongly believes that knowledge is the first step to change.
Like the American political system at large, Champaign County has a long history
of police misconduct and racial inequities continued in the form of racial profiling,
and senseless police shootings directed at African-Americans as well as other marginalized
ethnic groups. Although African-Americans make up only 12% of the Champaign County
population, they represent 75% - 80% of those sent to prison in the County.

WHERE: Latzer Hall, University YMCA, 1001 S. Wright Street, Champaign, IL 61820

WHEN: Fridays at 12 Noon

WHO: The University YMCA is Champaign-Urbana's oldest campus and community non-profit,
engaging people in service, reflection, and action since 1873.
