Opening Night Party Launches ELLNORA on Thursday, September 5, 2013, with $5 Quintuple Lineup

6:30pm: Fiona Boys Trio, Stage 5

7pm & 9pm: Stephane Wrembel and His Band, Amphitheatre

7:30pm: The Lee Boys, Stage 6

8:30pm: Sam Bush/Del McCoury Duo, Stage 5

9:45pm: Jonny Lang, Stage 6

On Thursday, September 5, a blues/acoustic/gypsy/gospel/bluegrass lineup ignites ELLNORA’s Opening Night Party—free parking, an all-ages crowd, a newly minted outdoor sonic space, and a $5 ticket complete the package.

At 6:30pm on the Lobby’s Stage 5, Aussie Fiona Boyes brings her striking soulfulness to the all-American blues. The first woman—and the only non-American—to win the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Boyes has wailing vocals that have earned her the seal of approval from blues giants like Pinetop Perkins and Hubert Sumlin and even the playful moniker “Bonnie Raitt’s evil twin.”

When you’re ready for a little night air, this year’s party has two options—a new location for local food offerings, now on the Center’s southeast terrace, and the Amphitheatre on the west terrace, where you can discover the French-born gypsy jazz musician and Woody Allen film composer Stephane Wrembel regaling us with his unique Django-, flamenco-, rock- and blues-inspired signature sound.

Head back to the Lobby at 7:30pm—to the special “Stage 6” set up just for the Opening Night Party—and welcome The Lee Boys, who enrolled in their musical education at the House of God Pentecostal Church in Perrine, Florida, at the knee of their pedal steel-playing pastor/grandfather Rev. Robert E. Lee. With joyful gospel roots and hard-driving R&B inflections, they stand at the forefront of the “sacred steel” movement, lifting listeners to their feet with get-up-and-dance rhythms.

The night keeps rolling with bluegrass legend Del McCoury and the “King of Telluride,” newgrass mandolin phenom Sam Bush. This remarkable pair will meld unmistakable authenticity with future-shaping sounds for what promises to be an all-out episode of jamming bluegrass goodness starting at 8:30pm on Stage 5.

Closing out the night—which is just the beginning of ELLNORA 2013—is Jonny Lang, who by age 14 had already released his first album. By 17, he’d captured his first Grammy nomination, and tours with B. B. King, the Rolling Stones, and Buddy Guy quickly followed. Now a 30-something seasoned musician, Lang has howling vocals and rock-infused runs that are certain to bring ELLNORA to a fever pitch when he takes Stage 6 at 9:45pm.
