"Teaching on the Inside: Reflections from the Education Justice Project"

prison higher education

Background Info: The Education Justice Project, a unit of the College of
Education at the University of Illinois, offers for-credit courses and
other educational programs to men incarcerated at Danville Correctional
Center. This innovative program is one of only a few dozen independent
college-in-prison programs in the United States. The program also offers
many
extracurricular activities including a Shakespeare play, discussion groups,
committees and other theater groups.

Rebecca Ginsburg, an Illinois faculty member, is a co-founder of EJP and
currently serves as its director. She'll offer an argument for the value of
prison higher education and share stories from her experiences with EJP
students at Danville prison.

Taking on a year-long look at the state of security in America, the Fall
Friday Forum series, Beyond Mass Incarceration, will peer deeply into
current issues revolving around incarceration and will feature expert views
on current issues at the local, state, and national levels. Friday Forum is
a weekly lecture series held during the fall and spring semesters that
strives to raise awareness about national and international trends and
events.

Lectures take place September 6 - November 8, every Friday at 12 noon.  All
lectures are free and open to the public. Lunch available by reservation
only ($6.50/3.00 student).  The lectures will be available to view on the
University YMCA YouTube Channel at
