New York City String
Band to Perform in Champaign

Presented
by the CU Folk and Roots Festival, The Downhill Strugglers will
perform in Champaign on Friday September 27th at Techline Studio, 307
South Locust. The show starts at 7pm with local string band,
Flatville Ditch opening. There is a suggested donation of $12 for the
evening.

The
Strugglers based in Brooklyn, New York were formerly known as the
Dust Busters and performed in Urbana two years ago in a show with the
Foghorn Stringband. They have released an album on Smithsonian
Folkways Recordings and are extending the legacy of the New Lost City
Ramblers by presenting an authentic sound of old time music to a new
generation. They integrate a wide range of old-time songs, ballads,
fiddle tunes, and banjo breakdowns into every performance. Their
music is infused with the old-time feeling and freewheeliln' energy
present in the true diversity of American Folk Music. By carrying the
music of the old rural America forward with verve and creativity, the
band make it thoroughly contemporary, and challenge audiences to
accept the old as new.

Not
only do they carry the legacy of the New Lost City Ramblers, but they
also play with John Cohen a founding member of the Ramblers. In 2010
they released and album with John entitled, "Prohibition is a
Failure". John Cohen says, "They have found resonance with
the intensity of rural music, while delighting in the nuances that
preserve the individual uniqueness of the genre. This is music that
will keep your mind dancing."

This
is a rare opportunity for folks here in Champaign Urbana to hear some
of the music that inspired the folk revival of the late 50's and
through the 60's, according to Ed Hawkes of the CU Folk and Roots
Fesitval.

Flatville
Ditch is a local stringband proudly playing tunes collected in
Illinois and unique to Illinois. The CU Folk and Roots Festival will
take place November 1st and 2nd this year in downtown Urbana. For
