Born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in Peoria, Illinois, Christopher
Troutman completed a BFA at Bradley University in 2003 after which he moved
to Japan, where he and his wife opened a conversational English School in
Kagoshima City. In 2008, after completing an MFA in drawing and painting at
California State University, Long Beach, Troutman taught studio courses in
drawing and painting at Eastern Kentucky University, Vincennes University,
and Eastern Illinois University. He currently teaches drawing at Lamar
University in Beaumont, Texas. In his studio research, Troutman draws the
human figure from dynamic perspectives in contemporary urban settings with
the aim to investigate the capacity of pictorial form to intensify aspects
of our daily visual experiences and reveal the value of daily life as a
topic for exploration in drawing. Troutman implements extreme vantage
points to reference comic books, which he further emphasizes by dividing
images into multiple sections to suggest the passage of time. Troutman also
uses multi-part drawings to juxtapose aspects of the various places he has
lived in the past decade, which primarily include in the United States'
Midwest and southern Japan, where he and his family return annually.
