C4A's Igor Kalnin, featured soloist at CU Symphony
Saturday, March 8

Krannert Center Great Hall

C4A faculty violinist, Igor Kalnin, will be the featured soloist this Saturday at
the Champaign Urbana Symphony's third classics concert of the season, led by music
director, Stephen Alltop.
Kalnin will perform the violin solo part to Ralph Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending,
inspired by George Meredith's poem about a skylark.  This piece is an audience favorite;
its lush harmonies and slightly nostalgic feel readily transport the willing listener
to a more peaceful and serene place.
Igor will perform two roles for this concert, occupying the concertmaster's chair
for Carl Nielson's 4th Symphony "The Inextinguishable" and the "Prelude" and "Isolde's
Love Death" from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde.
Associate concertmaster, Maria Arrua, will lead the violins for Russel Peck's
Signs of Life.
There will be a reception after the concert in the Krannert Center lobby.

More about Igor:
Igor is a welcome presence around C4A; he is known as a demanding and meticulous,
yet friendly and approachable, violin teacher.  He also coaches the Audacious Chamber
Orchestra.

Around town Igor holds the positions of Concertmaster of the Champaign-Urbana Symphony
Orchestra and Co-Concertmaster of Sinfonia da Camera, and has established a reputation
as an outstanding chamber musician and soloist.

A native of Russia, Igor has lived in the US since 2004. Since arriving in the states
he has served as a violin instructor at Yale University, a faculty member at Blue
Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan, Co-Concertmaster of Yale Philharmonia and Michigan
State University Symphony Orchestra, as well as Principal Second Violinist of Lansing
Symphony (MI) and Waterbury Symphony (CT) Orchestras.

He has performed internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra leader.
He is a prizewinner of a number of regional, national and international competitions,
and a recipient of numerous musical awards.

In Russia, he was Assistant Professor of Violin at Glinka State Conservatory in 
Nizhny Novgorod and a member of Chamber Orchestra Kremlin in Moscow.

He holds degrees and diplomas from Balakirev Music College (Russia), Glinka Sate
 Conservatory (Russia), Yale University, and Michigan State University.

Igor Kalnin, concert master,  is joined by his C4A colleagues Aaron Jacobs, principal
