Interviews Available: Indigenous Women on Climate Change and Development Goals

Monday, April 20, 2015 (New York, NY) – Interviews are available this week with Indigenous grassroots activists promoting women’s rights. Beginning today, these advocates will convene at the United Nations to share knowledge and advance policy recommendations.

During the fourteenth session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (April 20 – May 1), Indigenous activists will discuss local and global issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education and health. They will also advocate for Sustainable Development Goals that respond to the needs of the entire world’s people.

Available for interview:

• Lucy Mulenkei, Executive Director of the Indigenous Information Network (IIN) in Kenya, works with local women to confront the effects of climate change and develop sustainable ways of living. (English)
• Rose Cunningham, President of Wangki Tangni, a grassroots organization in Nicaragua, mobilizes to confront violence against Indigenous women and to demand policies that uphold rights. (English or Spanish)

Confronting Climate Change: Indigenous Women and Sustainable Development

Indigenous women leaders from Latin America, Africa, Asia and North America will share examples of responses to climate change and their community-based efforts to mitigate its impact. The panelists will also discuss the need for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address climate change and the importance of including Indigenous women in the creation of SDG policies.
