chance to meet and hear Robert Fisk of the London Independent.

area. We have delayed this announcement because Fisk is
expecting to be despatched to Afghanistan at any moment. Note
that this means eleventh-hour cancellation of these appearances is
POSSIBLE. We have been in contact with him, however, and chances

make the drive</u>. I estimate about a five hour drive from
Champaign-Urbana to IC, which is one hour west of the Quad Cities on
I-80 (highway exits direct you to campus). All events but one

MIDDLE EAST EDUCATION WEEK TO START OCTOBER FIRST IN IOWA CITY<br>

In the wake of the immense tragedy of the suicide attacks on
civilian<br>
workers in New York and military personnel in Washington, many
Americans<br>
are striving to understand what drives some people to carry out
such<br>
atrocities, sacrificing their own lives in the process. What has
caused<br>
such desperation, fury, and hatred? What are these people hoping
to<br>
achieve? Here is a chance to find out. A world renowned journalist,
who<br>
has personally interviewed the suspected mastermind of several
terrorist<br>
attacks on America, Osama bin Laden, will be keynote speaker during
the<br>
Middle East Education Week (October 1 through October 5) coordinated
by<br>
University of Iowa student organizations. Robert Fisk, an
award-winning<br>
British journalist known for his coverage of the Middle East and other
hot<br>
spots around the world, will give a public lecture on Tuesday, October
2,<br>
at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Lounge, Iowa Memorial Union. The topic of<br>
the lecture is "Reporting the Middle East: Israel, Palestine, and
Iraq --<br>
How to Tell a Fanatic from a Terrorist."<br>

In another public appearance, Fisk will read from his highly
acclaimed<br>
book, "Pity the Nation: Lebanon at War," at 7:30 p.m. on
Wednesday,<br>
October 3, at the Iowa City Public Library, Room A. In this book,
Fisk<br>
details his eyewitness account of the immediate aftermath of the
attacks<br>
on the Marine barracks and American Embassy in Beirut in 1983,
which<br>
killed over 300 people.<br>

Also on Wednesday, October 3, residents of Iowa and Illinois may
listen to<br>
Fisk and phone in their questions when he is the guest of Iowa Talks,
a<br>
live call-in show on WSUI AM 910, from 10 to 11 a.m. To ask questions

Other events of this week include a lecture panel in Shambaugh
Auditorium<br>
on Monday, October 1, at 7:30 p.m. The panel will focus on

laws guiding human rights principles as applied in the Middle
East.<br>
Panelists include Bruce Nestor, National Lawyers Guild President and
Iowa<br>
City activist; Marcella David, Professor at the UI School of Law, who
has<br>
studied the impact of economic sanctions on Iraq; and Jennifer<br>
Loewenstein, an American Jewish human rights activist from
Madison,<br>
Wisconsin, who lived in Israel and made several trips to Lebanon
to<br>
volunteer as an English teacher in a Palestinian refugee camp. The
panel<br>
will be moderated by the UI Center for Human Rights, represented by
Rex<br>
Honey, UI Professor of Geography, Chair of the Global Studies Program,
and<br>
UICHR Associate Director.<br>
