<p class="MsoNormal">CHAMPAIGN, IL—On display now until mid-February, <i>Petite Magnitude</i> is a series of paintings from MFA student, Hali Ruth Linn. As a body of work,
<i>Petite Magnitude</i> challenges the viewer to examine girlhood, sexuality, gender, and sexual violence.

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">As described by the artist, each painting in the series explores “how young women start to understand sexuality, first by word and then by experience and then a memory, that becomes understood differently with increasing life experience.”
Hali seeks to create images of young women “who are guarded, whose eyes are wide but glassy, whose hair is a cloak and whose clothes serve as a brigade to their inaccessible girlish figures. Upon a first look, they appear to be individuals and to have their
own identity, but the longer the viewer looks on them, the less definitive they are, the less like a rendered person with life experience. They become abstracted; their bodies lack womanly curves leaving them without an easily identified age, their faces combating
adulthood. These subjects represent an awkward age that is so laden with the struggle of growth and sexuality that it fights even to hide that struggle. The paintings represent how young women view violence and sexual assault and what they feel when their
sexuality is defined by someone else.”<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Women’s Resources Center, a unit of the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations, was established in 2009 and now is one of the largest of its kind. It hosts over 1000 events and meetings a year and collaborates annually with
campus units, RSOs, and community organizations. The art exhibitions held monthly at the Women’s Resources Center feature work by student artists on campus that explore issues related to gender, sexuality, race, class, or (dis)ability.
