But in my time on staff here at CMJ, I’ve reconsidered that. <br />
<br />
Sixty-seven years ago today, on December 10, 1948, the United Nations adopted the <a href="http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=WURktolWsIVoyGvkxNG0h71ja0zLTaPb">Universal Declaration of Human Rights</a> in direct response to the atrocities of World War II, affirmatively declaring a set of universal rights for all human beings.<br />
<br />
It does not mention the Internet, of course. The Internet would come much later.<br />
<br />
But the UDHR does affirm the right to peaceful assembly and association, the right to freedom of opinion and expression, and right to work and to have free choice of employment as human rights. <br />
<br />
These are all rights that most of us exercise primarily through the Internet. And yet, there are many low-income and rural people struggling to have the access they need.<br />
<br />
Together, we can win these necessities for people who need them. <a href="http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=kxnMsfPQeO9ILn%2FWe%2FHkWr1ja0zLTaPb">If we all pitch in.</a><br />
<br />
CMJ has won big this year—winning a major victory for prison phones, winning net neutrality, and defeating a major Comcast merger.<br />
