AmeriCorps Mtg
6/22/11
On-time attendance: Isak, Krist, ZB, Leon, Sam, Austin, Carol
Late: Kristina
Absent: Brian
- End of the year celebration for AmeriCorps members was moved to August
5th -- 5:30-7:30pm
- Closeout
- AmeriCorps is a project with a “positive focus” in an impactful way
but also has a bureaucratic structure that lots of us don’t care for
- We have to look at the work we’ve done with some pride re: our own
service & present a story about what the IMC is having on the community
(even though we’re funded by AmeriCorps)
- How do we take ownership over our own work, work which could not
happen without us
- What do you see as the “culture” of the IMC?
- (It took us 2 years to get a printer) -- what are some behavioral
changes necessary for us to become more viable?
- What are some strategic things we can do to position ourselves in
the community?
- People still don’t know who we are
- Next year
- We’ve been cut down to 8 positions next year; everything we do must
fall w/in a meager budget
- We’ll make it work
- As AmeriCorps members, we must be careful & cognizant -- our
activities are important; we need to stay within the framework of “direct
service”
- If you consider your service as engaged to the public (not
politicians), you’ll be safe; we have to be careful about the political
content of our work
- Open House for AmeriCorps members: July 8th in the Sun Room
- Positions should be “done” by Friday
- Folks can apply for jobs here then
- National Conference re-cap
- ZB was called out to present at the CNCS conference: it turned out
to be a “full-fledged AmeriCorps event,” I got to represent the
IMC and UC;
I was involved in different classes, learning about resources;
fantastic; I
don’t have enough hard drive space for all the information
- Next one will be in Chicago: you can go as an alum, get called
out by your AmeriCorps director, and get called by the CNCS
office (as ZB
was)
- Isak’s training
