Hi Chris,****

** **

I stopped by last night after visiting the Fab Lab and spoke to one of your
colleagues about your space and what you do in the makerspace. It sounds
very exciting!. ****

** **

I’m teaching a camp this summer at the Children’s Discovery Museum called
Design It, Create It, Make It inspired by the maker movement. We’ll be
doing a lot of science, engineering, art and making activities but I’d love
to have some experts in the field come in to work with the kids and show
them what people are doing in communities to encourage kids to make. Would
you possibly be interested to come to the CDM and do a workshop with our
camp kids? Your colleague was talking about a project in which you had
kids take apart some toys that make sound and rewire them to make musical
instruments. That sounds awesome! We’ve done lots of reverse engineering
projects at CDM but once the kids have them pieces in parts they typically
just “reinvent” something from the reassembled parts along with other
recycled materials into a fictional machine. I’d love for them to actually
rebuild something that works! What are some other things you’ve done with
the Orpheum?****

** **

My camp runs from July 22-26, 9am-4pm. This camp is for kids entering 3rd-6
th grade so are slightly younger than what you might be accustom to. There
would be a maximum of 20 kids. If you can’t come here, let me know and
maybe I can work out something for us to go there. Transportation costs
are always a pitfall for us to escort lots of kids. ****

** **

I’m hoping that we can work together and maybe find some other partnership
opportunities. I also teach all the older homeschool classes and our
homeschool families love when I add fieldtrip and outside experts to the
programming curriculum. ****

** **

I hope to attend the Maker Faire in September. Let me know if this is
something you would be interested in CDM participating in.****

** **

Thanks,****

Bethany,****

Your plans for Bloomington sound awesome! We're happy to connect & share
our experiences and expand the maker community in the Central Illinois
region. We've done some programming partnerships with the Orpheum
Children's Museum in Champaign and with the teen programs at the Urbana
Free Library, which sound similar to the types of connections you're making
there. We'll definitely have some ideas to share. Our Mini Maker Faire is
coming up Sept. 21, so maybe there are some folks from the Bloomington area
that would be interested in getting involved or at least coming over for it.

Makerspace Urbana is located at 202 S Broadway in Urbana, Room 16 in the

Hi everyone! ****

 ****

Thanks so much Jeff for emailing Chris at the Makerspace. ****

 ****

Chris, I’d love to drop by Tuesday after the Fab Lab. We’re also talking
about adding a small makerspace to our exhibits at the Children’s Discovery
Museum since this is a huge movement in the Children’s museum and science
center field. And we’ve been talking to a few folks in town about other
spaces and/or a Maker Faire. In addition, I hope to incorporate many
aspects into our education programming. So what better way to learn than
visit and talk to you folks!****

 ****

Could you give me directions on how to find you? I’m not too familiar with
Champaign-Urbana and the U of IL campus. ****

 ****

Looking forward to meet you both and checking out the spaces next Tuesday!**

Chris, Jeff,

I wanted to put you in touch with Bethany Thomas (copied) from the
Bloomington/Normal Children's Museum. She'll be in town visiting us this
next Tuesday - will the Makerspace be open by chance too? I think she's
interested in collaborations and you guys have a lot more experience
running electronics workshops than we do (not to mention more gear).

I wasn't clear on your current hours, though I see they're being announced
on Facebook regularly.

Think you could help provide some guidance for Bethany? Thanks!****

I’d be grateful for Chris’ contact information. Might be another great
place for us to collaborate with on programming. Maybe I can visit them as
well except I think they have different lab days/times. ****

Tuesday sounds good.

Yeah, I know several of the people over at the Makerspace and have visited
a few times. They help run events at the Urbana Library in parallel with
our activities there. In past years we've worked with them for Makerfaires.
My primary contact is Chris Ritzo, I can put you two in touch if needed.

Basically their schtick is electronics - they have many more soldering
stations and have much more experience teaching kids to do cool electronic
gizmo projects. We complement each other well in this way.

The lab will remain on regular open hours this summer and I may be making a
move to add Saturday open time once we've confirmed our expansion
space/projects.

See you soon!****

Hi Jeff,****

So sorry about last night. I can definitely make it next Tuesday (21st) so
that I can see the lab during open hours. I don’t have my kids that week
so I have plenty of time. ****

 ****

Do you know anyone at the makerspace in Champaign too? I got a little
information off the internet but don’t know much about it. Do you ever
work together? ****

 ****

Looking forward to visiting the lab. Thank you for being so flexible. Is
the lab open throughout the summer during the same open hours (T/TH 6-9 &
Sun)? ****

See you next week! Have a great weekend!****

Hi Bethany, I can meet you at the Fab Lab this Friday at 2p, but it would
be better if you could come in for regular open hours on Tuesday (the 21st)
because you'd be able to meet more volunteers than just myself. Let me know
what you decide. Thanks!****

Hi Jeff,****

A conflict has arisen tonight and so I need to postpone my trip over. I
should have figured the last week of regular classes at school would mean
every last possible concert, tryouts, projects and homework assignments!
Would it be possible to meet this Friday early afternoon or I could make it
out next Tuesday night (May 21st). I just didn’t know if you’d still have
open hours next week. ****

 ****

I still want to make sure to get you on the schedule for our summer camp
too. ****

Bethany,

A workshop day is probably possible, so long as we have sufficient
volunteers/staff available. I think it would be best if you could come
visit us in person this next Tuesday during open hours (6-9p Tue, I'll be
there) so you can see the lab, meet some of the volunteers, and pick out a
date/activities (there are many!) for the workshop.

If Tuesday doesn't work I can meet you during the afternoon of any of the
days you listed. Thanks for getting in touch with us!

Hi Jeff,****

We will only have 12 kids in our camp. So that should work out great. And
yes, we prefer as much hands-on as possible. Our camp runs from 9am-4pm
but we’d have to consider travel time and lunch time. How long typically
are your workshops? I’d like to fill the day. I would imagine us coming
in around 10:30 and would need to leave by 2:30-2:45pm. Would that be
possible? We can talk more when I come out. ****

 ****

Unfortunately, I can’t make it out today or tomorrow (meetings!) but could
come out next Monday, Tuesday or Friday. ****

Hi Bethany,

We'd be happy to host you for a visit. Your age group sounds about right
for us, but how many participants would you anticipate? The lab can
comfortably handle about a dozen for workshops, which is what we'd suggest
you do if you're going to make a field trip all of the way out from
Bloomington (besides, our preferred way to give tours is to have visitors
get engaged by making something).

If you'd like to come out to see the lab and make arrangements you can come
by during open hours this week (Tue/Thu evening, 6-9) or I could meet you
specifically, I'm free 1-2:30 tomorrow or 1-3 Wednesday, or most days next
week.

Let me know - thanks!

Hi Mr. Ginger,****

I am the Education Coordinator at the Children’s Discovery Museum and we
just had a meeting with Peter Kaufman from ISU regarding maker spaces.
Myself and our exhibit manager, Brad Stefl, have been talking about maker
spaces/maker faires for some time now since it is such a big movement
within the science center and children’s museum world. We have both
attended conferences recently in which we are learning more and more about
this movement. And we have tried to incorporate making, engineering, and
science into our programming at the museum.****

 ****

I would be very interested in visiting the fab lab and learning more of
what you do. I am also interested in possibly bringing our camp kids to
the fab lab this summer for our Youth Learning on Location camp that we are
hosting through the UNITY community center (low-income kids) for
6th-12thgrade kids. I am looking for various locations in the STEM
field to take
the kids each day and would be very interested in a technology/Maker day. *

Would it be possible to meet and tour the lab during the week at all? ****
