Hello all:

Because I have met with some of you several times about the space planning
process at the IMC, I want to give you a personal update on the process as
it applies to your two Working Groups. This communication is meant to
supplement the email recently sent by Danielle Chynoweth on behalf of the
Board of Directors.

Unlike others receiving Danielle's email, your Working Groups have been
assessing your space needs intensively for several months. These
assessments have been motivated, in part, by the Board's announced plans to
consider finding space for Working Groups upstairs on the first floor.

While the design charette on April 12 will consider such relocations, I
want to stress the importance focusing your efforts between now and then on
achieving a clear sense of what your specific space needs are regardless of
where you are located in the building. This is because it is difficult to
know what ideas may surface at the charette about how first floor space
might best be used. Many proposed uses have already surfaced (e.g., moving
the stage/performance area to the Sun Room, adding new restrooms and a
kitchen area, adding a lounge/conversation/snacking area near the new
kitchen, converting the library/computer area to a general purpose
meeting/classroom space, and finding an appropriate space for the new art
gallery), and others may emerge from the diverse groups present.

By having a clear sense of what your space needs are, you will be in the
best possible position to advocate for space on the first floor if you
determine such space is feasible/desirable for you, but you will also be in
a position to know how your current space in the basement might be expanded
or improved if you were to stay where you are. It may be that with
increased accessibility to the basement, better security, and/or upgrades
to your current space, the basement location will emerge as your preferred
choice. Further, as renters on all levels of the building come and go, with
a clear sense of your needs you will be poised to optimize acquisition of
space you need wherever it is located.

Let me close by encouraging you to continue your internal assessment and
planning process and then to come to the design charette both excited and
prepared to participate in the process. Looking to the future, the IMC is
poised to expand its contributions to the community and wider world, and
each of you offer programs that will greatly enrich these contributions.
