this week's Madison ISTHMUS reports that local indie filmmaker JIM TAYLOR
is attempting "the ultimate in performance art" by (get this!) running
for president without any corporate funding--and making a movie about it
at the same time.
here's a snippet from the article:
'With eight campaign staff here in the Mad City, a film crew of six
snipping clips in St. Paul, a pile of USC friends working on distrobution
in L. A., and a host of volunteers across the country throwing
fund-raising dinners (mac 'n' cheese soirees at $15 a head), Taylor is
reaching through the gauzy fabric of "Generation Next" to make his dent
with a campaign called <RUN SOME IDIOT.> He'll be 35 by the time he
hopes to tromp his way into office, and while he realizes it won't be "a
cakewalk" to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, he is hoping to get off to a good
start by winning key hotbeds of unrest ("like the isthmus") in the
primaries...'
Parallels to the geurilla journalism of Michael Moore, of course, abound,
and Taylor's movie biz agent Dionell Guanco is spinning the campaign, and
the film about the campaign, exactly that way. From <The Isthmus> again:
" 'Jim is the idea!' Guanco titters. 'And that's what's so original.
It's refreshing. It's commercial. I've always wanted to take on
something like this.' "
I say, let's call Jim Taylor and throw him one of those "mac 'n' cheese
soirees at $15 a head" here in Champaign-Urbana! I'll post more info.,
after I get a response from Madison.
does that count as good news?
