More about Occupy / Peace and Justice caroling - we have more definite
plans after last night's practice, which was fun.

    - We're going Saturday evening, the 22nd. I know this isn't good
for everyone - sorry! - but hope it will do for many of us.

    - We talked about gathering first in the IMC's basement for a last
practice at 6:30 (or should we start earlier? 6:15?)
and then heading to somewhere in Bristol Park in north Champaign
-- north of Bradley, east of Market St.,
    - singing from about 7 until 9 pm,
    - and then returning to the IMC where we'll have set out coffee, hot
chocolate, etc.

We have a double handful of songs, some familiar Christmastime ones,
some familiar tunes with altered lyrics, and some that we just enjoy
like Union Maid. (We're calling ourselves the Peace and Justice Chorus.)

*Bring a flashlight if you can*, to read the lyrics by.
If anyone else would like to come, please let me know!

[One possible starting point: a Habitat house in Bristol Park
neighborhood, a blue house at the corner of Clock and Bellefontaine,
mentioned in a June N-G article which advocated for flattening the
entire area. But we should go look around to be sure, first. Anyone
know the area?]

       (Christmas chestnuts)
    Deck the Halls
    Jingle Bells

(familiar holiday tunes with altered lyrics - thanks, Moonyeen!)
    God Rest Ye Merry Veterans
    Joy to the World
    O Little Town of Washington

(familiar, but not usually Christmas songs)
Down by the Riverside / Study War No More (with some changes)
    Union Maid

      (maybe also)
We Wish You a Merry Christmas
    Imagine

It'd be natural to sing Christian Christmas songs too (I love "O Come,
Emmanuel"...) but we aren't planning any.

Lyrics below, starting with the altered songs. We amended some of these
at Monday's meeting. I'll aim to bring all the below in print form on
Saturday.

* God rest ye merry veterans*

  God rest ye merry veterans
  Let nothing you dismay
The wars you fought have ended
And peace is now the way.
  We’ve now been saved
       from warfare's power
  We will not go astray
O tidings of comfort and joy,
  Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

*Joy to the World*

Joy to the World, when wars are done!
  Let earth rejoice in peace;
Let every heart repair the harm,
  And Christians and Muslims sing,
  And Jews and Buddhists sing,
And all the people of this world sing.

*O little town of Washington*

  O little town of Washington
  What harm you cause abroad
Will you please put your guns away
  And have all war outlawed?
For if thy dark hearts findeth
A glimpse of Truth and Light
And end the fears of all the years
  Our future will be bright.

*Down by the Riverside**/ Study War No More*

Gonna lay down my burden,
    Down by the riverside (x3),

Gonna lay down my burden,

    Down by the riverside,
    Down by the riverside.

*Chorus:*
I ain't gonna study war no more,

ain't gonna study war no more,

ain't gonna study war no more.

I ain't gonna study war no more,

ain't gonna study war no more,

ain't gonna study war no more.

Gonna *lay down my sword & shield
*
   Down by the riverside...
   Chorus
Gonna *sing out my song of peace*
    Down by the riverside...
    Chorus
Gonna *shake hands around the world
*
    Down by the riverside...

[[we talked about other verses, like
Gonna put down my pistols and guns...
but decided to leave it at four.]]

*Deck the Halls*

Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
'Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our gay apparel
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Toll the ancient Yule tide carol,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
See the blazing Yule before us …
Strike the harp and join the chorus ...
Follow me in merry measure, …
While I tell of Yuletide treasure ...
Fast away the old year passes …
Hail the new, ye lads and lasses …
Sing we joyous, all together …
Heedless of the wind and weather …

*Jingle Bells*

Dashing through the snow
In a one horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bob tails ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and sing
A sleighing song tonight

[refrain:]
Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh

A day or two ago
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side
The horse was lean and lank
Misfortune seemed his lot
We got into a drifted bank
And then we got upsot

[refrain]

*Union Maid*

There once was a union maid
   who never was afraid
of goons & ginks & company finks &
the deputy sheriffs who made the raids
She went to the union hall
when a meeting it was called
And when the company boys came 'round
   she always stood her ground

[refrain:]
O you can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union
I'm sticking to the union, I'm sticking to the union
O you can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union
I'm sticking to the union 'till the day I die.

This union maid was wise
to the tricks of company spies
She never got fooled by a company stool
   she'd always organize the guys
She always got her way
when she struck for higher pay
She'd show her card to the company guard
& this is what she'd say:

[refrain]

You women who want to be free
take a little tip from me
Break outta that mold we've all been sold
   you got a fighting his-to-ree
The fight for women's rights
   with workers must unite
Like Mother Jones, move those bones
to the front of every fight

*We Wish You a Merry Christmas*

We wish you a Merry Christmas (x3)
    and a Happy New Year.
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Now bring us some figgy pudding (x3)
    And bring some out here.
For we all like figgy pudding (x3)
   So bring some out here.
We won't go until we've got some (x3)
   So bring some out here.
It's a season for music (x3)
And a time of good cheer.

[[but what on earth is figgy pudding? and do we want to demand that
the people we're visiting feed us?]]

*Imagine*

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky

Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too

Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
You may say,
I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day
You'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say,
I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day
You'll join us
And the world will be as one
